Train Driver Uniforms

Hello guys,

Just wondering if you could share what uniform your company provides and expects you to wear? Reason I ask is I've seen drivers at FCC for example wearing different sorts of uniforms, shirts and tie and some with polo shirts etc, what are you companies policies?

This is because we have a choice of either. It comes down to your personal preference or the availability of your size in the uniform store!

FCC seem to have the most options for drivers. We can wear pink or blue polos or white or pink shirts with or without ties and have Harrington jackets or suit jackets.

The polo shirts and Harrington jackets are only really issued to drivers as they can be easier when climbing in/out of units in depots etc and as we have look back at a number of stations ties can't be compulsory.

Men driving trains at my company can either wear a blue polo shirt or a blue shirt (long sleeved or short sleeved, with or without a tie). Women can wear the same as men but also have the option of a blouse or pullover. They are also permitted to wear shorts (I am not sure if skirts are available) but must carry trousers (either 'real' or paper) as trousers are compulsory for going on the track.

Higher grades wear a white shirt with tie, or a white blouse or pullover (women).

On top, a jumper, suit jacket, parka (without hood), winter jacket and fleeces are all available.

Caps are available, with differing bands depending on grade, but are not issued by default. If you want one I suppose you'd have to persuade the budget holder!

East coast can get hats but I don't know any drivers who have one.

I don't think any other companies still have them sadly.

East Midlands Trains still have hats as an optional uniform item - I only know of a couple of staff who have them though. I much prefer spending my optional points on extra trousers or shirts, which are far more useful. A far cry from the days of Midland Mainline when they were compulsory!

Most companies have a heavy coat, gloves, scarf, hat and fleeces or jumpers. Although most drivers choose to wear their own hats/gloves etc and a few wear their own coats to.

A few conductors still seem to like having a 'proper' hat, I don't know of any drivers having them though.

We get everything except pants and socks.

So: trousers, short sleeved shirts, long sleeved shirts, pullover (long sleeved), tank top style short sleeved pullover, light Harrington style jacket for summer, winter coat with detachable liner, ties (clip on or traditional, take your pick), shoes/boots, hi viz, fleecy gloves or mittens, driving gloves with bobbly bits on the palm and fingers, fleecy hat, rain hat/cap thing with flappy bits over the ears, scarf.

Quantity does not equal quality however.

At my TOC we get all the usual gear. The 'uniform policy' though is largely non-existent on the Drivers side and rather open to interpretation on the Guards side. We have everything from drivers who wear jeans and tracksuit tops to one who always wears very smart suits. I love seeing the variation in the mess room.

The majority of our Drivers and Guards though do wear a uniform, be it issued by the current TOC, previous TOC or British Rail! I'm sure a couple of our older drivers are still wearing the jackets they were issued as Secondmen in the 70's.

Don't think I'll apply for a driving job with FCC then, pink, or, blue polos and shirts, I'm a b:loody railwayman, Sid Weighell and Jimmy Knapp will be spinning in their graves.......

For us uniform is the same for both drivers and shunters which includes blue shirt, tie and either cargo type trousers or standard smart trousers. Also get issued with beanie hat, gloves and fleece jacket.

Do get issued with polo shirts but only supposed to wear them when out on possession sites.

We should have the same uniform as our brothers across the channel.

No uniform except a kind of utility body warmer / gilet / waistcoat type garment which is optionally worn over ones own clothes.
