Just once in a while when I've reopened the doors for someone who rushed onto the platform at the last second, they've made the effort to come up to me on arrival at MYB to say thanks, which is nice.

I guess I do get thanked by a lot of people who think they have missed the train and then have the doors reopened. They usually smile and wave as they board though.

Do drivers always wave at Signallers? And do signallers wave back?

I've noticed a lot of freight drivers waving at the signallers at Hest Bank but do passenger drivers wave too?

I've seen a few drivers give a quick sound of the horn when passing though.

If I can see the bobby and he is looking I will usually wave. There are a few boxes where you know you will usually get a wave

That would be difficult for me to do, as they're in their own cabin, rather like a train driver! I thank the conductor though, and do the same on a train if exiting at their door or an adjacent door.

I do think it would be seen as slightly odd if someone went out of their way to thank someone though - unless there was something specific or you knew them.

I'll give a wave or thumbs up to any railway staff in any grade when I'm pootling along on my merry way. Always give a toot and a wave to kids on overbridges or platforms etc (always nice when the mum is good looking...).

If you don't mind me asking, what line do you drive trains on? Last I knew it was one of the Underground lines, is that still the case? (if it's the Met, be careful at Chesham, a certain long-standing member of this forum got locked in the toilet there and they had to cancel his train !)

I suspect you are travelliing on a First FTR, where drivers are referred to as pilots!:-?

On the vast majority of buses outside London though, they have one door at the front beside the cab, so it's easy to say "thanks" when alighting, they can hear you through the glass screen. I've noticed that it's still done, even in the big cities.

Having said that, I do try and be polite and make general conversation when I have a bit of time to all staff at my depot and if I happen to be out on a train going somewhere. In my opinion whether its a driver, engineer or office staff, we are all rail staff therefore all in the same boat!

When I see a train on the move usually at a crossing i like to give a wave, 9 times out pf 10 i get one back and sometimes a toot, always makes my day (some may say I have an empty life ). Do any drivers respond if you see someone doing an up and down gesture (like kids do to trucks on the motorway, not the other up and down gesture)?

Train was 16.25 from Northampton to Euston as the woman said she boarded the train in Bletchley at 16.46, great to see!

Quite a few drivers acknowledge each other in passing. I know a fair few drivers now and normally give them some sort of gesture in passing, if it's one I know then I quite often have a word when I've got off the train. If they're at the cab door you do sometimes hear other passengers thanking them as they alight!

Was speaking to one driver who said she hates spotters (in particular) who ask for "tones". She said that she will normally give a 'toot, as you put it, if a spotter or other member of the public waves or raises a hand but doesn't want to 'reward' such idiotic behalf.

I know a freight driver in Yorkshire who always placed a car reg plate in the cab window with the words 'NOT BEN' printed on it.

A great guy he is. Always wears his orange hard hat too, even in the mess room!

I always make the effort to thank the crew but I'm not gonna run down the train looking for the ever illusive guard! Normally when Marshlinks terminate the crew stand together at the rear cab so i'll always take the time to thank them then.

I'm footplate crew on a steam railway. We usually only operate one train at a time so can't often wave to other trains on our line, but at one point (where we stop to reverse) we are alongside the main line. If a main line train is approaching, we always wave and whistle and invariably get a wave and toot back. Often the guard in the rear cab gives us a toot and wave as well!

This surprises me. I wouldn't have thought you could have seen that much of an oncoming train's cab from something like a 15X which has very small windows and a big corridor connection frame sticking out at the front AND with the driver being sat well back in the cab too.

I was near the front of a 150/2 between bradford and halifax and a 158 passed in the opposite direction and the 158 driver certainly raised his hand.
