Train Driver Interview Questions?

Can anyone tell me the kinds of questions asked in a Train Driver Competency Based Interview and Line Manager Interview please?

They are both quite lengthy though this is partly due to all the note taking they do!

Questions such as:
Give an example of when you have had to deal with an emergency situation.
Have you spent a long period of time alone? How did you cope with that?
Give an example of when you have undertaken a repetitive task.
How did you prevent yourself from getting bored with that and keeping your concentration?
Give an example when you've assisted a member of the public.
How do you cope with stress?
How do you cope with fatigue?
Have you had to undertake studying for something before?

That's mainly the sort of questions in the criteria/suitability interview. It's more based on your life experiences than anything.

The managers interview was similar, I was actually asked some of the same questions on both though the managers one was more geared towards the actual job. Questions such as:

How do you think you would cope in the event of a fatality?

To be honest, the managers interview was more of a two way discussion and I found that more relaxed. I found the criteria interview hard work! Just my experience

Do a bit of research on the company. No need to go overboard. Just don't go in there not knowing what routes said company covers. If I remember correctly, I had to name a few stations.

To add to the above, in the line manager interview, they may well be looking for evidenceof particular things. For example, a flexible attitude to work, recognition that the job involves seriously anti- social hours, some experience of shiftworking, willingness to work as part of a team, your communication skills, etc.

Turn up smart, ie a suit. You're applying for a 40k professional job. Look and act like it all times. Make sure you're on time, but if the worst happens, and you're running late, get in touch with them.

3. Why do you want to be a driver
4. If a work colleage had to describe you what would they say about you
5. Explain a time when you have worked in a team
6. Tell me what you know about the company
7. What is your sickness record
8.Have you had eye lazer surgery
9. How would you get to work at 3am in the morning!
10 have you ever worked alone or spent time on your own for long periods, ie. a hobby?

These are accurate and these questions will be asked during your interview and a good interviewer will know if they are being blagged, answer honestly and accuratel, the most important is the sickness question as this is checked out after interview! You will also be asked other question but they will all revolve around the ones above! If the interviewer wants more in depth answers they will ask, don't dig yourself a hole and just answer the question asked!

Hello All

New here had a quick look through and would like some advice please

I have an interview on Thursday at the depot with the train drivers manager and the local operations manager which I’m told will last about 1 hr 30 mins

If you go by the quotes given above I did these on my test to become a train driver back in 2008 when I passed the full day testing in London so will they ask me the same questions again seems a bit strange

It’s a very long time ago I applied to become a train driver it 2005 and got a letter back to say I was successful they would be in contact well I moved after about 2 years but lucky for me I took the same phone number with me and well it took 3 years for them to even ring me to say I had a test in London in August 2008 which I attended and passed and I only heard something last week to say I would be having an interview for Thursday this week

So any help for this interview from you guys would be great

Hello All

I have not got a reply and i have looked into it more it seems to be that the questions above are for the The Structured Interview which i did on my full test day so in this order

Psychometric Testing
Structured Interview

And now i have the

Manager Interview

which with the site i have read will go something like this

This is a conventional job interview, probably with an operations manager and a drivers' depot manager. They will ask you why you want to join the company, why you think you would be good at the job you are applying for and how you think you would fit in. Make sure you have done your homework about the company, its activities, geographical range, depot structure, parent company etc. because you're bound to be asked about it. You can hardly apply to Southern and then ask if they run services to places like Peterborough and Oxford or whether they run freight trains! They may also ask you questions such as "What have you done in your current job that has involved using co-ordination?"; "If I asked your employer what they think of you, what would they say?"; "If I asked your mother what she thought of you, what would she say?" or "Do you think you would be able to cope if someone decide to jump in front of the train you were driving?"

Do you know who the MD of the company is? How many services they run or how many stations they serve? That would be a good start my friend.
