Train design inspiration

Does anyone have an idea where the inspiration for train design comes from?

I only ask as driving behind a Nissan Leaf recently, it struck me how similar the rear was to the new 700 stock.

I tried to think if I could attribute any other stock to other makes of cars, but realised Bombardier's 377,172,220/1/2 didn't really have any inspiration, whereas the Desiros are, well, who knows where their inspiration came from!

Think we know where all the Leyland stock was inspired from. Its all aerodynamics that inspire the body shape I would have thought

From this, it would seem that the design tends to be forced by the specification. It has to be flat enough for the driver to see out, strong enough to provide some crash protection, vaguely aerodynamic, and relatively modular.

I think that the designs aren't bad. They're good. Although do have considered safety.
