Adif has reported through its X account that it is "an incident during a manoeuvre" and that all High Speed trains between the Chamartín and Jardín Botánico stations are suspended

A train without passengers has derailed on Saturday afternoon in the tunnel that connects the Madrid Chamartín and Madrid Puerta de Atocha stations, according to Renfe. The incident has forced the suspension of the circulation of High Speed trains that connect the capital with the East of Spain in both directions.

In summary: At about 4pm today, the axle of a train became derailed during an empty stock movement in the tunnel between Madrid Chamartín and Puerta de Atocha. Two railway employees were treated for bruises and shock but did not need hospital treatment. AVE services from the east of Spain are being diverted to terminate at Madrid Atocha.

Just an observation from the photo, I don't wish to speculate. It's interesting the leading vehicle has derailed into the apex of the curve rather than in the other direction that I would expect centrifugal force to act.
I'm thankful it was ECS and those who were onboard are ok.

Yes I was thinking that too, although it may be the last rather than the first vehicle of course.

The train was being towed without an active braking system when the coupler failed. The train then rolled backwards into the curve (due to a slope) and derailed with two employees on board.

That is an utterly idiotic piece of operating.

The risk of having unbraked vehicles at one end of the train (with single point of failure being the coupling) has been known about almost as long as we have had railways - hence why unbraked freight wagons had a brake van on the back. It's an 1840s accident in 2024.

A runaway train went through six stops on a 13-minute journey on London's Tube with other trains having to be cleared out of its path.

The engineering train became uncoupled as it was towed on the Northern Line near Archway station on Friday morning.

Passenger trains were diverted to another branch of the Northern Line while trains were cleared from the Charing Cross branch.

The train ran for nearly four miles before it stopped at Warren Street.

It came to a rest only because there is a slight incline at the station.

Regarding the derailment of the 114 yesterday, we ask for responsibility and that hoaxes and speculations be put aside. An investigation needs to be done and, for the moment, what is known is that:

➡️ The train was towed damaged and without brakes towards Fuencarral.
➡️ At one point, it disengages.
➡️ Due to the slope of the tunnel, return towards Atocha gaining speed.
➡️ After traveling several kilometers, it derails on a curve and skims the tunnel until it stops.
➡️ The two technicians who were on board emerge unharmed.
➡️ The tunnel is closed and today 29 trains from the 3 operators have been canceled.

Looks like all of the holes in the Swiss cheese lined up.
