The biggest shock in that picture is the size of the train. It has 4 carriages! Up here in the windswept north you are lucky to get 3 coaches in the peak, let alone off peak. People have to nearly stand on the roof just to get home.

I know! I was shocked when I moved down there for a brief period, my service was usually 8 or even 12 (yes Twe-elve) carriages long. I nearly fainted, I was expecting something along these lines :D

Regarding the modifications to units, the southern railway e-group has a wide variety of information on all types of SR units, including a decent close up and comparison of 466 and 465 unit front ends. Take a look half way down.

Why anyone would want to cling on to the back of a pacer is beyond me, they would bounce off

Surfing was a problem for the Metrolink tram system in Manchester, particularly (ok, especially) the Eccles branch. Initially the type 1 tram was not allowed down this route (primarily because the couplings were uncovered as were the bogies) and the type 2 (essentially the same just with covers) were the only ones to run in the area. The rule was relaxed and as a result the local "members of our future generation" discovered the hobby of sitting on the rear coupling. Though then again there was the time a tram actually got "held up" by armed robbers who simply boarded at one station, worked their way along and got off again without the driver noticing so I guess they had bigger problems...

Anyone remember the ICE surfer damn youtube have done a licensing thing and blocked the soundtrack.

As far as I'm concerned, hit the plunger and send the little F*rs flying, then drive over them. The railway and BTP spend a fortune trying to protect people from injuring themselves by ****ing about on the railway and the scroats still go and manage to do it anyway. I say spend money protecting them that will learn not to do it and let the others kill themselves and give us the chance to get on with it. Too much mollycoddelling in this country now.

/\ Regarding someones' siggie and the phrase "country" I mean all member countries that make up the UK ;)

I can't think what goes through someone's mind when climbing on top of a train roof! What an idiot. If there was 25kv AC OLE, the electricity would have arced and killed him.

I can honestly see why Network Rail and the British Transport Police are increasing their campaigns about Railway safety! Sadly though, people have to learn the hard way about the dangers of the Railway's- predominantly death :(.

I hope BTP really go to town on him! It's the Train Driver and the customers who have had to suffer the delays I feel sorry for.

With a bit of luck natural selection and a few Darwin awards should hopefully work to rid our railways of eejits <D

If a train driver becomes alerted to this during a journey (normally by radio from another passing service) the driver of the train with the 'surfers' has to to slow to a stop wherever they are on the network, even if it's in the inner lines of a four-track.

Many drivers will attempt if at all possible to stop in a station but this isn't always possible, and if they stop in the middle of nowhere (like this one did - then the 'surfers' effectively cannot get down, as it's effectively a 4metre drop to the ground from the top of a train without a platform to land on (same as jumping out of your upstairs window) - so they end up marooned on the roof until the emergency services get there - like this chap. ;)

Your really do not know what you are going on about - you cannot contact another train from your cab and also if you get an emergency stop from the signaller you stop no questions asked about station or whatsoever unless instructed to do so. Of course for this incident we do not have any evidence of why the train stopped and who alerted the driver, however if the driver had carried on the the statin the chap could have fallen off the roof and dies either by injury or electricution.

Even more disturbing than this, I saw a picture of a kid tightrope walking along a section of 1.5KV wire between Sunderland Station and Park Lane...fortunately the juice had been turned off...It was in last nights Sunderland Echo as part of a Network Rail Campaign to keep kids off the tracks

Even if the juice were on, he'd be safe as long as he didn't touch anything with a route to ground. Which of course makes getting off tricky (and getting on for that matter)! Of course, it's a very stupid thing to do, I doubt the wires are rated to hold any kind of weight and the risk of coming to injury by falling off is high.

The "gentleman" in question jumped from the footbridge at Durrington station as the train was pulling out, apparently landing in the recess for the pantograph. The station you can see in the distance in Goring-by-Sea. Crewed by a Barnham conductor and Victoria driver. Worryingly I have the duty that has that service next week so will keep a sharp eye out! Oh, and yes he was drunk!

What makes you say that? I'd stop as soon as I possibly could, and I can't imagine any other driver doing anything than that if they'd been told there was someone on the roof. I really don't think any driver would carry on to the next station if that's what you're suggesting.

I'm just repeating what SWT drivers have told me - apparently the brakes are very good on the new units and can effectively throw a surfer off balance if used very hard. Someone did it once and the investigation concluded a more 'sympathetic approach' to dealing with trespassers. Essentially, no one wants a fatality on their hands, and a 4metre drop onto third rails at speed is a pretty sure fire way to cause a fatality.

If they can slow to a stop in a station - they will do. If they can't they'll bring it to a controlled stop on the tracks and get power turned off asap.

The best scenario is that a living person is arrested - like I said, no one wants a fatality.

I never said you could - read the post again. Perhaps I could have phrased it better but: passing drivers report stuff to control, control then relays it back to other drivers. It's actually a very common thing, although normally it's about trespassers on the line, not about trespassers on the roof.
