Apologies if this has already been shared.

Passengers were left stranded on a cold and wet railway station platform yesterday - because train staff had accidentally locked themselves out of their OWN train.

The "shambolic" incident involved a 5.20pm Newton Abbot to Truro service, one of the few which had not been cancelled because of Storm Callum.

Network Rail had been forced to close a stretch of the line next to the Teign Estuary, which connects Devon and Cornwall with the rest of the country, on Sunday morning after discovering a hole in the track above a culvert.

But when passengers arrived at Newton Abbot train station on rail replacement buses, they found that it was doors - not holes - that were proving to be an obstacle for Great Western Railway.

Its driver and a station manager were filmed trying to pull open one of the doors, before the manager was forced to clamber into a window and manually release the door locks.
A platform worker was heard remarking "I have never heard a crowd cheer for train doors opening before."

And, in a bizarre addition, travelers also noted that a loudspeaker announcement kept repeating that the inaccessible 5.20pm service at the platform had been cancelled.

The loudspeaker would then inform the passengers that their next train would be: The 5.20pm service at the platform.

I've never been locked out of a train, but I remember being trapped in the galley once when an internal door that had spent the entire journey failing to shut, then closed and locked behind me, and completely seized. Managed to escape via the driving cab 45 minutes later at the next stop.

Something doesn't seem right here, why not just use the external egress to open a door? Or would that render the set out of service until the glass was replaced?

I've seen it done at Euston on a Class 350 by a guard dispatching from a passenger door. After standing there looking like a prat for 30 seconds while working out what he'd done, he re-entered via the cab door using his T key and admitted the error.

He'd left the panel unlocked and keyed in (obviously), so had I not been so well behaved I'd have gone and hit the release for him.

Is it just me or does anyone else find all these local ‘Cornwall Live/Devon Live/Anywhere else Live’ pages completely hopeless with all the pop-ups etc?
My heart sinks when I see that a link directs me to one of these.

Hopeless websites and hopeless 'journalism' - clickbait masquerading as news.

Main reason why the likes of U Block Origin, other ad blockers, plus pop up blockers are now necessary when using the Internet

With the droplight window open were they not able to reach in and open the panel to release the rest of the doors? (I'm not sure how easy/possible this would be at the TM door)

The external egress doesn't involve breaking any glass though, the only time glass has to be broken is in a emergency and you're trapped ONBOARD then you smash the designated window to get out.

Why they just didn't just enter via the cab and release the doors I don't know maybe there was a issue?

The Google surveys are the most annoying. But absent micropayments and people willing to use them they are about the only way the local press will survive, sadly.

I saw this via Facebook yesterday - the only thing I would call "shambolic" is the reporting. The "money-making" headline is "...driver and guard LOCKED OUT of their own train..." but reading along, the driver wasn't locked out as it sounds like they had been looking back from the cab. The thought I'd had was could the guard not have gone in via the powercar sliding door or alternatively could someone have walked back through from the cab to the saloon via the engine compartment (the latter probably isn't allowed though). The whole thing seems a bit odd!

The crew door on the TGS aren't linked to the CDL, so there's something not right about this story at all. Also when working the panel from a local door, saod door will not lock until the panal has been keyed out. Not sure what's happened, its an odd one and something isn't quite right

Twice this year I’ve pushed my guard through the window of a 158 to get it open. Very easy when there’s no air in the system. You get people moaning that the trains are left standing, with engines on while at not moving, then you get people moaning that staff can’t get in them when it’s time to depart!!! Make ya minds up!

On the assumption that I have correctly identified the train as an HST, the external butterfly for the CDL is behind glass - or at least was when this FGW training video was made. Relevant section starts at about 11 minutes in.

However as already pointed out in the post two above yours, the staff door in the TGS isn't fitted with CDL. The video shows staff trying to pull this door open.

I've actually had the exact same situation on a 350 at Apsley. Was about to go and hit the release/local door to let him back in but didn't want to look like I was gonna give two and send it on its way so I let him traipse to the back and come down the aisle to have another go

This isn't the guard.

The train was terminated at Newton Abbot due to the line closure and reinstated to run back to Cornwall. The guard booked to work the service was caught in the disruption, whereas the outgoing guard had secured the train and gone back to Exeter.

What you are watching is a driver, platform staff and customer hosts trying to break in to the train so passengers who have been waiting for a train to be able to board rather than stand on the platform while a guard is making their way to the station.

Following this story, staff are Newton Abbot are wondering why they even bothered trying what should have been a nice gesture.

That video is of a Mk2.
It features sections about both Mk2s and HSTs (yes I'm sad enough to have watched it in its entirety), the section about doors circa 11 minutes in is definitely an HST and not a mk.2
Just to prove this-vehicle 42083 as used in the demo is a Laira-based HST trailer.

Devon Live / Herald Express are a dreadful entity.
