Reports a local commuter train braked suddenly to avoid hitting a man running across the tracks, the driver then told passengers via intercom he had lost control and was unable to generate forward motion, spent 20 minutes stationary trying to fix it then the brakes keeping the train in place failed. The train allegedly then rolled backwards down hill with the driver yelling hold on and passengers racing to the front carriage before hitting a stationary intercity sleeper service following it on the same line which had paused to allow 5 regional trains to pass it (the failed train was the fifth). The points allegedly also failed to correctly operate to divert the train. two carriages of the commuter train and two of the intercity were derailed.
Early casualty reports are 6 critical, 16 sent to hospital, 50 injured out of a total of 445 passengers plus train crew on the second train. The passengers having mostly retired to their bunks may have minimised injuries.
Commuter train had a driver, drivers mate and two conductors with the two conductors being injured, the train crew of the intercity were also among the injured.
