Double Swiss train crash: 17 people injured

10 January 2013 Last updated at 10:59 Help Seventeen people have been injured in a double train crash in northern Switzerland during rush hour, according to police.

The accident happened near the station at Neuhausen-am-Rheinfall shortly before 0800 (0700 GMT) between a train travelling from Winterthur and another from Schaffhausen.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes said the trains crashed side on, with the engine of one train crashing into the carriages of another.

The EMU (from Winterthur) is a Stadler lightweight (I think). Reversible double track splitting into two single tracks at the point of collision.

Looks from photos as though the Re4/4 and D/D stock on the SH-Zurich train had the road, but that may be prejudging it.

http://rt.com/news/trains-collide-northern-switzerland-696/ has some good photos, in one of the you can see the training points set for the loco, but just because points are set does not mean the route/signal is.

Which is why I said we mustnt prejudge.

Having said that, basic signalling principles would leave the points "normal" for the straight route, the more so with it being the end of a single-track section (or rather two parallel ones).
