Last week on route to steeton the train was delayed then finally cancelled dye to a fire at steeton

there seemed to be 100's of people

Northern says coaches were on the way - but say a higher value ticket in hand are you entitled to a refund or how long are you expected to wait before using other means

look forward to thoughts

Paul

If a delay is caused by something outside of the railway's control - as is probably the case in this instance - you're not entitled to a refund.

If you were entitled to a refund it's worked out on the same basis whether you have a cheap or expensive ticket (if that's what you're asking?) - for example 50% refund for delays between 1h, 100% over 2h. Not sure what Northern's policy is.

I understood that any delay resulted in a refund - regardless of whether it was the fault of the TOC, another fragment of the railway, or something entirely different. After all, to a passenger, a delay is just as inconvenient if it's Northern's fault as if it's Joe Bloggs setting fire to something. I presume the TOC will take out insurance against such claims.

...unless you decide not to travel by train, in which case you can get a full refund without administration fee.

Depends if the TOC is on the relatively new 'delay repay' scheme or not. If it is - you will be refunded for any reason after whatever the time is - 30 mins I believe.

However TOCs still on the previous refund schemes (franchises let before it was required by DfT, eg SWT in 2007 or those earlier such as FGW) do not have to refund you for stuff outside the railway's control, such as the fire brigade putting the line out of use, vandalism, bridge strikes etc etc.

This is the case for TOCs participating in a Delay Repay scheme, but I believe only these will refund for any delay. Northern do not have Delay Repay.

edit: swt_passenger beat me to it!

..... and it makes no mention of exclusions should the delay be outside of the railways control.

Their passengers' charter says they will refund at least 50% for an hours delay.

Not a refund - a rail travel voucher where the value is 50% of a single or 25% of a return ticket. However, when it's outside of Northern'c ontrol they usually send a Northern Rail day pass instead despite what the passengers charter says.
