Yep as mentioned, you would be multi skilled, with the official title being Traffic Manager.

You will be a signaller (TM1), so doing the normal day to day monitoring of the network, actively intervening to protect the service and dealing with any incidents as they crop up. This is using one of the latest digital signalling products in the UK, using CBTC. This will stand you in good stead to go elsewhere and even around the world with CBTC being applied to more and more places.

The second role will be TM2, electrical control. This is similar to a NR ECO, controlling traction, HV, LV power systems, along with monitoring security systems and controlling the tunnel vent system both during normal operations, maintenance periods and incident modes. This role is busier during the nights than during the day (day time is reactive mostly). Again the tech used here is more modern than others with some automation on power turn off for engineering works.

The third role is TM3, this is editing/amending the timetable, either for extra trips that the TOC wish to run or due to service disruption, it only deals with the Central Operating Section and not the NR lines on the east or west. This role may also deal with train delay attribution.

TM3 Can now be seen as the entry level role, then you would progress on to TM1 or TM2 training, once that is complete then it would be the other role TM1/2, to complete your full multi skulking journey.

This can take up to 24 months.

I wouldn’t expect to be MS in all 3 roles in less than 12 months (as mentioned above), each role is 2-3 months training, then consolidation/coaching/mentoring followed by passing out, gaining your authority to work and then a period of working independently.

It’s a good place to work, the people are great, it’s a small team so almost has a family feel plus it works with some of the latest technology, which will stand you in very good measure for any future role, if you wished to progress in the railway.

Not many can say they have operated a 24tph mainline railway.

Good luck.
Thanks so much for this insight. Sounds very interesting. Has anyone heard anything back yet? I’ve done the online tests (they sent two at the same time) but I’ve not had any more. Not sure if I should be expecting any more or whether it’s just a case of waiting to see if I’m good enough for the assessment centre.

Has anyone heard anything or had an interview yet? I’ve completed the tests and it looks like my application is still active. I thought I would have heard something by now, whether it’s good or bad news.

can confirm that cover weeks are a complete pain, roster is ok apart from that, as with most rosters there are good and bad aspects

Same boat as you my man, according to the application it sounded like training was supposed to commence this month? But as you are probably aware railway recruitment can move pretty fast or painfully slow. Will definitely update if I hear any news

Ok thanks. It’s good and reassuring to hear that we’re all in the same boat.. or maybe we’re all just crap. ;)

Can you imagine LOL. Got an email today, saying there is a delay in the decision making process and I shall be contacted when there is an update. Has anybody else received this email or something different?

Heard back today - did not pass the online assessments. It has been so long, I do not recall what they even were, though, I do recall feeling fairly optimistic. Good luck to those who have progressed further. I would be interested in following your journey if you feel like sharing it here :)

Can only hope there is improvements with the TMs the amount of mess from them and control at times doesn't help the drivers or plat staff. Especially with ghost trains which are caused by sudden unplanned step ups

I think you’d need to understand the structure and who is responsible for what, before make such a comment.

TMs aren’t responsible for the train service, the Train Operating Company is and with the setup and commercial arrangements those decisions are made by the TOC, rather than the IM.

Any issue you have shouldn’t really be spouted on a forum, for the view this can give others. If there is a comms problem, then the TMs are just as in the dark, as anyone else such as platform, station, SOR and drivers.
