Hi all. I have booked some advance tickets from York to visit various spots in London in April. At the time I also bought a zone 1-4 Travelcard for ease of getting round the various stations I want to visit. However I plan a trip from Euston (on the fast line to get the locos in Wembley Yard) to Harrow & Wealdstone. However Ive just noticed that this station is one outside the boundary in zone 5. I understand that I can get an extension ticket ?. Do I buy this at Euston before travelling or on the train. Also any idea how much this will cost ? Thanks for you help in advance.

Cheap day return is £2.70. On Mondays to Fridays, you cannot make the outward journey before 09:30. Weekends are unrestricted. You should buy this ticket from a booking office before you travel.
Alternatively, I am not sure whether it is possible excess your ticket to a zone 1-6 travelcard. If possible, this would cost £1.20

It should be possible, unless there is some rule preventing travelcard excesses. Try at York station if you're there any time soon.

It's very rare to have your ticket checked between EUS and HRW (they tend to rely on the barriers), but if a RPI appeared then a penalty fare could be charged rather than an excess. In reality if not getting off on there the chances are no-one would know, but you should really get it excessed.

You will probably be doing 90-100mph through Wembley so you'll only get a quick glimpse.

Out of interest, what part of York are you from (if you don't mind me asking)?

York would be able to do a Boundary Zone 4 to H&W ticket, but I'm not sure about an excess to a larger zone area, I've never seen it done. It should be possible, but, if it is, York could only do it if they have the correct Travelcard ticket stock, if not, you'll have to do it in London.

Thanks for the replies. I am going on a Saturday and therefore I have two Offpeak zone 1-4 Travelcards, one adult and one for Child version (for my son). So what you are saying is that I can take these two tickets to York station and pay the excess (approx 1.20ish), do they issue me with new tickets or stamp the existing ones ??
In reply to Yorkie I live in Holgate right opposite the old Carriageworks where in the early 90s I could see all the brand new units freshly built in the yards. Unfortunatly I packed in spotting for the first time in the mid 80s and only restarted last year when my 11 year old wanted me to drag him around the network and of course I got bitten by the bug again. Ironically a lot of the units I am now chasing I saw from my bedroom window but never noted the numbers !! When the works closed I could see all the freight (with binoculars) on the avoiders but now all the office blocks having been built cannot see anything !! In closing I have to say that the Friends and Family Railcard is an absolute bargain at £24 because if you book Advance singles you can get around the Network (almost as cheap as when I was a lad, I'm now 41 !!) (ie) London for £26 and just booked a trip to Glasgow for us both for £19, all with reserved seats thown in. Absolutly amazing !

You cannot excess Travelcards, at least not from a National Rail perspective as what would you excess it under? If they were willing they could refund the original and reissue the ticket. Also when you head to York bring your Travelcard with you as many booking office staff will not issue Boundary Zone extensions without viewing the valid Travelcard as well.

If you do the hourly Southern service you'll go past the Holding Sidings at Wembley at only around 15mph, this stops at Wembley Central so you wouldn't have to get any extra tickets just position yourself to get on/off at Kensington, Clapham or similar.

Could also take a 313 on the DC lines round the back and get a look at what (if anything) is on the HRD and a glimpse of the Scotrail sleepers on Wembley Depot plus anything else stabled round the back.

Thats a really good idea 87015, I forgot about the train from Clapham Junction (where we intend to spend some time). I did't realise this went along the "fast lines" past the yards. I will do this and save myself a few quid too, thanks for the great advice.

"fast lines"

It doesn't - it takes the slow lines on WCML, as opposed to the fast lines on the WCML or the DC lines Euston - Watford. The only services to run on the fasts won't stop at Harrow as they're mostly Virgin.

A father and son on this forum live very near you (not sure if they count as Holgate or not!), I'm not too far away either ;) I'll send you a PM.

Just to clear this matter up I intend to travel on the 15.38 from Clapham Junction and alight at Wembley Central which is still in zone 4. Whether fast or slow, as long as it runs on the west side of the yard that will do for me. I also intend to take 87015s advice and take the dc line back to Euston "round the back". I am right in thinking the WCML slow lines run to the west of the yards ??? At least then I will get any available locos front and back. If the Southern train does only go slowish past the yards I should get all the numbers on one trip, even with my eyesight !!

The main lines (fast/slow) are to the West, and the DC lines are to the East. This changes just south of Wembley Central where the DC lines dive under the main lines and are then on the West of the formation the rest of the way to Watford Jn (with a huge deviation at Watford!).

The DC lines are exclusively for the use of 313s/tube stock, although I have done it behind a Class 37 (with the driver thrashing up at each station!) and I've seen photos of HSTs diverted that way in the 1990s!

And it's best to do it on the 313 rather than the tube stock, because it is higher above the ground, and easier to see stuff!

True, but don't expect to see anything sat down as the windows line up with pillars and seat backs! Stand up on a 313 is the best way to do it I think. Unfortunately it will be obvious to the normals what you're doing though! (Glad I'm not a spotter ;))
