Just because you don't like a few home truths in some of the replies? You asked for advice and have been given some sensible responses from people who have been involved in preservation - were you hoping only to get a particular type of reply? Nobody has been abusive so I see no reason to lock it at present.

I don't think that is necessarily the tone I would expect from a moderator. He has asked you to lock it on the grounds (as Phoenix rightly says) a number of people have ridiculed his dreams and ambitions and questioned his motives and age. As a moderator, you should be able to realise that a poster is unhappy with some of the questionable remarks made.

As for the thread, maybe it is a bit on the heavy side as far as ambitons go, outrageous even! But so what?! If a person has a dream, who are we to deny said dream? I say go for it! Personally, I really want a Hovercraft. I can't afford it and don't have space for it but, boy howdy, I would own my very own Hovercraft! If a Class 37 is what you want, don't let the nay sayers stop you!

The thread needs to be pulled back on topic I think. I do not know how much it costs to fill up a 37 with diesel or storage or repairs or anything like that. The OP wanted a better understanding of the costs. If there is anyone out there who has a bit of knowledge on the issue, here is your chance to shine! Any ELR volunteers out there know what gets spent on their 37's? Let the man know!

Also, is it worth finding out how much it costs to take it on tour and the potential revenue available from that?

I received an invitation from EWS to inspect several 37s last year with regard to putting a bid in for them. There was a sheet about Asbestos attatched though saying if I was successful, before I could have them, I would legally be required to remove it.

A bid of £23,500 (exc. VAT), was beaten. In any case, no operator is going to give you credit facilities to pay back £30 a month!! Maybe £300/week?

Also what about paying for:

1. Access to the railway tracks (Network Rail fees)
2. Fuel
3. Storage / Somewhere to fuel
4. Regular Inspections
5. License / Training - im not even sure you can obtain a permit to drive trains privately/individually.
6. Liability Insurance
7. Older locos are going to need parts replacing - obtaining some of these parts will be difficult and expensive.
8. Breakdown recovery plans
9. Setting up a LTD company as individuals aren't granted permission to use paths.

I developed a business model, found suitable sidings, liased with Network Rail/ORR, tendered a reasonable bid, and still got nowhere despite spending a fair few quid.

If your interested, the business model was practically a Open Access Operator that ran 'on demand'. i.e. TrainTaxi Ltd.

It's a brutal and yet delicate art moderating a forum. Sometimes you get it right and sometimes you get it wrong. Everybody has different opinions. I think that the bus discussion and age crap aside, there have been some really honest insights and I think that stethomson90's post just above is absolutely stunning regarding the effort involved regarding making a bid never mind actually having the loco.

Sometimes you need to let more people add their experience. This thread will provide a lot of help to those who ask the same question in the future.

Dreams and an imagination are good. It sets us aside from the other animals. But the lad would be interacting and hassling those who are paid to ensure that locos are run and sold properly. They don't need people who don't have serious financial backing adding to their stretched workload.

This put down is nothing to what the real world can do to him. My advice is to keep the idea on the backburner. Review it again around 22/23.

I agree with you entirely. SteThomson has demonstrated that the information wanted is available quite easily. I would also agree that there has been a fantastic array of informed opinion. Sadly, this has been interspersed with individual commets designed entirely to mock and cheapen the vision the OP has. More sadly, one of these mocking posts came from a moderator who then replied to the request for locking in a completely derisory and unacceptable fashion. A while ago, a thread about the class 142 became locked because of a small number of stupid comments. There are probably just as many - not only stupid, but totally unecessary - comments in this one.

You cannot have a go at someone because at age 16 they have a dream. Equally, you cannot then have a go at someone when they are affected by the earlier questionable coments, especially if in a position of power. It is equivalent to a teacher having a go at a pupil for reporting bullying.

I hope that the OP has not been put off by some of it and therefore stopped reading this thread as some incredibly insightful information has become available which has shown, quite clearly, the costs and responsibilities involved - just what the OP wanted.

Dreams and an imagination are good. It sets us aside from the other animals. But the lad would be interacting and hassling those who are paid to ensure that locos are run and sold properly. They don't need people who don't have serious financial backing adding to their stretched workload.

Hence 'the lad' opened up a thread to find information without having to resort to that. And anyway, none of these paid people would have gotten anywhere without being in the same situation as the OP at some point in their life.

Here is my advice:

The world is littered with teenagers who had a dream and made it happen and now could not be happier. It is also littered with people who, during their teenage years, could have done a lot more than they actually did and long for another chance to do it all again. My point is this. If you want something bad enough, have a go. If it is possible and you work hard enough so that it can be achieved, it will happen. BUT be prepared enough so that if it doesn't happen, you do not become discouraged - where there is a will there is a way.

I think it's being kept open as an example that there are too many people coming up with hair brained ideas to blow there money, when, as people, such as 37412 (who also happens to be 16, so there is no ageism here!) has said, £30 a month would be far better going to a preservation group rather than a person with no clue of finance or engineering skills wanting to buy some WNXX rust-bucket.

I am not saying this thread shouldn't be locked, as fair enough, it has digressed, but I find it a bit sad that the OP wanted it locked as soon as the replies weren't in support of his somewhat 'avant garde' idea.

Forums are for people discussing ideas and plans, and if people don't think the plans are sensible or rational, they are more than welcome to discuss that freely- whether the person who has chosen to post it likes it or not. At the end of the day, it's the OP's decision if he posts a thread in the first place or not, so he should take the rough with the smooth when it comes to replies. At the end of the day, everyone so far has just commented on the plans themselves, rather than made personal comments.

That's all very well, but unfortunately, if this individual was to ring up DBS and ask to buy 37xxx, and pay £30 a month for rest of his life, they would probably laugh at him and/ or put the phone down. People can't be wrapped up in cotton wool and live life through rose-tinted spectacles. The harsh reality is that his plans are very unlikely, and it would probably give other prospective buyers a harder times if too many 'time wasting trainspotters' ring up asking if they can buy 37s with their pocket money. I've spoken to people at Booths in the past who have become almost 'anti-trainspotter' due the amount of 'passionate teenagers' people asking if they can buy this and that locomotive. If there are too many people like that, then it has the potential to put them off selling to enthusiast groups who are serious. No one wants that to happen.

There's also the cases where people have sadly spent their money on buying trains, only to realise it's a big mistake, and making them financially ruined.

I wasn't mocking the guy, just telling the truth. If people don't want to listen to advaice and accept it costs thousands to keep a loco and buying (and paying for) a loco is the easiest part of owning it, they are welcome to bury their heads in the sand. Having been involved in preservation myself (as have others who have posted), some of us know what we are talking about. £20,000 for generator repairs anyone?

As for not locking the thread, it was something I discussed with one of the other moderators. We are not going to close threads just because an OP gets the sort of response they don't like. As I stated, people shouldn't think they can start a thread then demand it is closed just because they don't agree with some of the replies. Perhaps this is something people should consider when starting a thread.

That's an important point which may people forget, companies are not going to be happy if they have to waste time dealing with those who realistically cannot fund the purchase. In the current list of locos for sale on wnxx, one even states "Serious offers only, 'No day dreamers, kick buckets' etc.". On another loco last year, the dealer insisted that offers had to be made via an accountant or solicitor.

But some people have made personal comments. You have missed the point here - as has theblackwatch. Look back at the posts made up to the point it was asked to be locked and then look at the one where it actually is asked. You will see what I mean. I'm sure a plan to buy a loco and keep it for £30 a month is a bit on the mental side, but you can't blame the guy for asking. Sadly, most of the relevant, appropriate and informative comments were made AFTER the request for locking.

I buy 30 quid a months worth of shares in an operational 47. I share ownership of the loco with a lot of other people and it's far simpler and less painful than having one of entirely you own if it goes bang.

Better he realises now than later...a mate of mine bought a loco a few years back, and now he's saddled with a rusting hulk that demands his wages every month simply by doing nothing but sitting in Barrow Hill depot. Not moving. And it never will because is just scrap now

Dont do it..ever..unless you have a few hundred thousand to spare..otherwise invest your 30 quid in a group of enthusiasts as has been suggested. Or better still..wait.Save your money and invest in yourself. Then, after a while,if you still feel the same, give your money to a preserved line/loco charity..dont ever leave yourself short over a machine. And I am a train buff at that, but food and clothing come first!

You aint ever going to drive it either, unless you pass the same test all train drivers have to take,as you cannot take a separate/private/anything other than NR rules stipulate test for driving...sorry but thats the ruling!

I really admire your enthusiasm, but look at the bigger pic. If you want to drive trains..do it and get paid to do so...whats better than that?

As for owning a train,/loco I would only want to if I had a team of fitters to take care of it...I drive, not mend lol...wheres the fun in having to spend every day just making it work and not being able to move it?

I bought 2 Class 37s. One is a split headcode and the other a central box, twin light. They're both DCC ready and one has sound. They run on my 16.5mm track and are maintained every week.

And even they cost many months at £30. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
