Hi everyone

this may sound a bit of a daft question for some but to others it may help

I am currently looking to buy a Loco at the moment i dont mind what loco it is but my Preference is a class 37, im also intrested in a Mk1 or a Mk2 as well
I am aware of the WNXX locos for sale however they dont seem to like time wasters and i dont want them to tell me the price them i chicken out.

I also considering a payment plan for larger sums of money e.g £30 per month but i pay more in the long run

Im mainly looking to buy a loco from a storage depot in the hope that this brings the price down, im also looking for a loco to buy off a FOC

If anyone on here knows anyone, can point me in the right direction or even owns a loco they wish to sell, please contact me

I do believe that a decent, working 37 will cost you not much less than £30,000. So, at your £30 a month suggestion, it will take u 83 years to pay it off. Certainly long term! :roll:

(And that price doesn't include any transportation costs, storage costs etc)

I'm sure his Bank Manager will be interested to hear about his suggested payment plan if he goes and asks for a loan! As will the road hauliers you mention (who will want a couple of thousand), the VAT people, and the site where the loco gets dumped, who will want rent each month.

I think his time, effort and £30 a month would be much better put towards a loco alkready in preservation, i'm sure there would be plenty of groups who would love to hear from you regarding you volunteering your time to work on their locos. This would aloow you to learn how the locos work and collect the knowledge you would need when restoring a loco and when you have a bit more to spend in 10 years time you will have a lot more knowledge to go and buy yourself a loco with if you still wanted to, not having a pop or rubbishing your plans, just think that you would be jumping in the deep end before you can swim so to speak.

Victorialine67, I wasn't having a go, simply pointing out that your ideas seem to have been devised whilst looking through a pair of rose coloured glasses, so to speak.

I would do as 37412 suggest - a much better, more realistic idea.

I Concur with this,

I've volunteered for some years at a preserved railway, and the above would be the best course of action, having experienced working on locos, etc. It's more than you'd imagine work-wise & cost-wise.

But you do get to "get up close" as if it was yours, by volunteering.

A few questions for you to consider:

1) You are looking at more than £30 a month to store it, let alone pay for it
2) Where would you store it?
3) What would you do with it?
4) How will you pay for inevitable cosmetic repairs rust etc?
5) Do you think in less than five years time you might have other things you would want to spend money on instead. For example somewhere to live....
6) Do you live in a dream world?
7) Do you have any idea whatsoever about finance?

Get school and uni done first before considering any commitments like this. Believe me a lot can change in this time. You will also have various issues to deal with such as financing which will make it impossible for you to own it without being 18 at least.

If you are only 16 I would suggest doing what 37412 says. You need a lot of money to buy the thing and store it then you have to pay for fuel if you want to run it about and maintain it, hiring a driver etc etc, it all adds up.

I own an old bus, a double decker. Got it for £1000 and the storage alone for that is £60 per month. Plus the costs of repairs and the time too, filling it with diesel is not cheap either. All costs add up.

I am quite lucky as I earn a lot of money so can easily afford it but you being 16 unless your parents are extremely wealthy and can buy it for you then I would do as suggested and get stuck in to a local group. They may even let you drive one eventually.

Honestly I would put the loco idea aside for a while because if your under the age of 21 most companies or individuals will just laugh at you for even asking but that doesn't mean it's a stupid idea just one that needs a large amount of money time and long hours of thought.
I have had the same thought before but on a smaller scale but even then I came round to the idea that it wouldn't work out but seriously I think the reccomended options for you are.

1.Join a group as the younger you are the better as when the fogies are dead and gone it will be up to you to carry on the groups name.

2.Try something really small to give you a taste of what is to come with a loco such as a Vintage road vehicle such as a Moped or car.

3.Take on a Miniture loco but maybe one that is a little more complex than batteries and radio controls.

With the limited supply of money and the young age I would be very risky to take on such a a large Burden plus the fact is you may not get a locomotive.
Also with your current preference you will end up the owner a complete pile of scrap as good locos get very good offers and well waiting around for a while till the next Hellfire class is withdrawn is a better option.

For example classes 57,67,86,60,58,56 as all these have example that wont be sold off for quite some time.

I wish you luck with whatever endeavors you take on but please for your own sake please think long and hard as there are many who have lived to regret it.

Just because you don't like a few home truths in some of the replies? You asked for advice and have been given some sensible responses from people who have been involved in preservation - were you hoping only to get a particular type of reply? Nobody has been abusive so I see no reason to lock it at present.

No offense but it is at the point where it should be locked as he got his reply and has something to think about and the way you just worded that one leads me to believe your keeping this open for the sake of it.
So I ask you to close this thread on the ground that the answers have been found and it will become pointless.
And just to add only around 50% of the replies are sensible the rest just take the P*ss and ask inappropriate questions about his age.
