If it's in the third rail area your hearing this sound, could it be the sound of the shoe gear hitting the conductor rail ramps, how many pinging sounds do you hear before the train arrives?

Living in a third rail area myself, I also thought it was the third rail making that noise, but diesel and overhead trains also make that noise. The third rail does make a similar noise too, as there is an additional pinging/vibration when a 377 comes along that is absent when a 171 comes.

I think that there are two very distinct but very simular noises here, 1 is the shoe gear hitting the con rail and 2 is the sound of the wheels going over BJ or IBJ both seem to cause pinging sound that reverberates through the rails both running and conductor ahead of the train. The shoes gear hitting the con rail is very distinctive on the down fast at Three Bridges but you can definitely hear that class 170 hit the block joint at Tamworth in the other video clip.

All this talk of the noises made by the track make me miss the sound of the wire cables pinging as the signal is pulled off indicating the approach of the next train as I'm sitting on the sea wall at Teignmouth. Will it be a Western or a duff, or is the dmu stopper due....
