Hi,
Just applied for a track maintenance operative in m/cr. Anyone know what a typical day involves. A friend of mine said it's a young man's job. Also salary is 22000 but he said u can earn alot more with shift pay, weekend work, overtime etc. Is that true? Any help much appreciated. Thanks Rick

It's not really a young mans job. If you're fit and healthy, you'll be fine at any age. Saves a gym membership!

Shifts vary, as does the work depending on the gang you're in.
Not 100% sure what terms and conditions the Manchester area teams are on, someone else may be able to confirm, but you can see them here.
The salary figures are out of date however.

Antisocial hours (weekends and nights) do attract higher rates.

NR are continually on a crackdown for overtime, so never rely on earning that. I'd just plan for the basic of what you'd earn if you were off sick, and any anti-social hours, or overtime payments are a bonus.
