Track Inspection Operative

Hi all,
I have applied for a track inspection operative position with Network Rail and I have been at "application under consideration for assessment 2" since 16th may 2016.
It is now, 7th July 2016 and still no change, is this normal ? :roll:
I have rang HR who basically couldnt offer any further advise or information but I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience? :-?

Obviously I am very eager to land this job, I have been trying to get on network rail for the last 15 months and have only had 1 interview in that time.
The whole process (when I received an interview offer) took nowhere near this long before...
Has anyone else experienced such a long wait of over 2 months to be under consideration for assessment 2?
Is it a good sign / bad sign etc...?

As you can probably tell, I'm sick of waiting now... I'd just like a yes or a no because I simply don't understand why it's taken by so long. I mean, why offer a job if you're not in a rush to employ ?

Don't be surprised by the wait! NR can take a long time over these things! Are you aware of what the job involves?

The railway is slow and takes its time over these things sometimes. Patience is a virtue as if you are not patient to wait for some news from them then how patient are you going to be within your role?

Firstly, thank you for your reply! I wasn't sure that this long of a wait would be the usual practice because as mentioned above, the job I was previously interviewed for by NR was done and dusted within 4 weeks from applying.

The latest job I have applied for, is approximately 10 weeks on from application and I am still none of the wiser. I was simply wondering if my wait was normal practice that's all. I know I'm not guaranteed the job by any means but 10 weeks just seems a little excessive. I have been at "application under consideration for assessment 2 for the best part of 9 weeks now

Sometimes it takes ages, so just stick In there and I'm sure it will work out! Yes you will be involved with basic visual inspections and minor maintenance, lots of lookout duties! It can be a great job, I've done it and enjoyed it! If you want any more detailed information send me a PM!

How come an inspection operative post is advertised to a new starter (not that I have anything against them) when the job will involve applying judgement - whatever the Standards might say. One would expect that experience of the realities of maintenance would be essential to producing sensible output from their work, or are they so well-staffed that they can send an additional experienced body all those miles to re-examine every borderline result?

An operative will not be going straight into inspection duties. Duties will be driving, lookout, assisting with maintenance. It's a long time and a few courses before any one is allowed to do an actual track inspection.

I have 5 years worth of rail experience personally. 3 years as an operative and 2 years as a coss but I totally get where you're coming from. I suppose somebody with absolutely no experience, be sent out to inspect the track would indeed be quite worrying/alarming.
I do however have lots of experience in that department, however none of this has helped me to gain employment from NR in 15 months of trying :roll:

Additional courses and bettering myself in regards to qualifications are always nice to have, no matter how big or small.
I would love to work for NR but I've only had one invite to interview in 15 months of applying.
Can't help but think I'm doing something wrong but everything I have is fully up to date in regards to my cv, cover letter and application pack.
Just gotta keep going I suppose

Yrs, just keep trying! You will enjoy it, plenty to learn and it's all straightforward really! Look, listen and learn mate and it can be a good rewarding job!

Well done on your job.You wouldn't want to do track inspection until you are comfortable and few years experience on track.As said before keep your nose clean head down and you will love working on the railway.All the best

After being at "under consideration for assessment 2" since 16th may - July 26 (9 weeks) I've been informed this morning that I was unsuccessful with my application.
Gutted is an understatement
