struggling with this question on assignment im doing ''Explain a selection of track components and the common failure modes of track components.''

i understand what the track components are and why each part is necessary, however not what some of the failures are associated and what the effects may be

Longitudinal rail split

loss of rail foot
that sort of thing ?

Goes into a lot of detail about failure of the rail itself. Gareth is a permanent way engineer by trade so I assume he knows what he's talking about (though I don't believe he's specifically a metallurgist or expert in metal fatigue).
