Track Circuit Operating Clip (TCOC) placement

Morning everyone! Regarding the new rule book update when seeing an obstruction on an adjacent line. We now have to do the usual (emergency call, reds/hazards forward etc) but now drive 1+1/4 mile past the obstruction and place a TCOC down there. Just so I’m clear, if we reach any of the 4 teas + a sugar (tunnel, train approaching etc) would we place the TCOC there as you would dets?

I wouldn’t get out and place a TCOC immediately in front of an approaching train, no. Lol
But other than that I would presume so yes, although your ops standards might be the best place to ask

Does it take into account AB lines that aren’t track circuited? I thought it was just generic in putting them down.

No. TCOCs must still be used, even though you might as well place a couple of Weetabix on the rails for all the good they will do on a line fitted with axle counters.

It does, because the priority has switched from

Protect the line
Contact the signaller

To

Contact the signaller
Protect the line

So if you can't immediately contact the signaller you do the full emergency protection.

If the signaller advises they cannot provide signal protection, they will ask you to do full emergency protection.

GSMR being widescale will not only contact the signaller immediately, but also a REC emergency call will help bring trains in the vicinity to a stand.

Are you after the part about being able to drive 1.25 miles to lay protection ?

It was changed a few years ago.

TW1. 43 "Trains put in danger"

You must warn the driver of any approaching train, if possible, by:
• sounding the horn
• switching on the hazard warning indication where provided.

If you cannot switch on the hazard warning indication, you must display a red light forward.

You must continue for at least 2 km (1¼ miles) beyond the
obstruction and stop there.

You must then tell the signaller in the quickest way possible, if you have not already done so.

When the signaller tells you that signal protection has been provided, you must place a track circuit operating clip on each affected line.

I thought the same, the latest change was December 2021, to bring instructions in M1 and TW1 in line with each other. Confusion over!
