Oh no!
gutted for you. To get even this far to be let down like that is devastating
Had my email to invite me to take stage one of the assessments. I had already done the assessments with Northern a few weeks ago though, and passed. I have informed them, of course, as they asked, but have now said:
'Thanks for letting us know your recent assessment scores. We have checked this and unfortunately your scores can't be carried over to First Trans Pennine Express as they are using enhanced scores only. The outcome of this is that we are unable to progress your current application with First Trans Pennine Express and you will need to wait for a period of six months before applying again. You can however continue your application with Northern.'
Fuming mad isn't the word. So much for these tests being valid for up to 5 years. And so much for them all being the same with a standard pass or fail. Beware people. All is not as it seems.
I've heard that TPE are one of the hardest TOC's to gain employment with, even qualified train drivers are faced with additional tests before TPE will take them on, now I don't know if I was been led up the garden path yesterday, but got talking to a TPE guard whilst on my way to work, he told me that in order for trainees to progress to the second stage of assessments, then wannabe trainees have to have an average of 95% pass mark throughout the days testing. I'm not optimistic of getting that kind of pass mark, but good luck to everyone that goes, and good luck to those that already have passed the tests.![]()
There could be quite a lot if truth in what he says. They can afford to cream the crop when so many applied. I just been offered a bus position with First and if I need 95% for a train position it looks like I'll be on the buses for a while!!
Correct me if Im wrong, you need a higher mark to pass the equivalent tests with FTE than what you do with Northern?
So what would have been a pass at the assessment centre with Northern could be recorded as a fail with First Group, using up one of your goes?!Please excuse my ignorance!!

I was also thinking this. I think it would be unfair to class a 'fail' with First as one of your changes if that 'fail' is a pass with another company such as Northern. I would be interesting to see how this works.
Got my invitation to stage 1 on Friday....not sure what to make of the pass mark for TPE, il take a pass at this point!
If we pass the assessment but don't pass TPE, are we free to apply to other companies and tell them we have already passed the assessment centre?
If you pass the test, but you are not good enough for TPE, then you still have a valid pass result in your pocket, you'll then be able to take that pass to any other TOC, most companies will then put you straight to interview stage. Good luck!
Thanks, that is good news![]()

TPE - Trans Pennine Express
OPC - The Occupational Physiology Centre this the company who do the assessments as part if the recruitment process
TOC - Train operating company
And another one is
FOC - Freight operating company
Hope that helps![]()
Hey everyone
Just wondering if anyone has heard back about doing the first part of the assessment. I'm getting somewhat worried as I know of two people that went for the same depot as myself and have got dates to do an do the first part of the assessment but I haven't heard anything since the email saying I had passed the interview. I applied for Liverpool
good luck Lr driver, I failed my first attempt at the mmi, six months nearly up for me but it's been a long wait
