I used the TPE website yesterday to purchase several APs (TPE between Manchester and Liverpool/Middlesbrough if it makes any difference). After the fourth booking, the following message appeared:

TPE said:
You have now made the maximum allowed number of purchases today (4). You will not be able to purchase any more tickets today.

Does anybody know why? My first thought was that it was an anti-fraud measure, but if so it's rather redundant as one could simply purchase 4+ journeys in one booking.

I've spoken 3 times with TPE (web sales/web support/general customer relations) over the last 16 hours, who despite having the best intentions, were unable to explain it.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I can't explain it, but I did have exactly the same issue with the CrossCountry website the other week.

(In my case, although I used the same website account, I used two different payment cards so it's a four-transactions-per-website-account, rather than a four-transactions-per-card limit.)

I don't know.
I had to book several sets of advance tickets in quick succession using the East coast website a couple of years ago and found that after the 3rd transaction within about 10 minutes, HSBC blocked the transactions as presumably they thought there was some suspicious activity of several online transactions from the same vendor.

Anti fraud measure. Which is why they let you have a basket to keep putting your travel requirements in(why you would do otherwise is up to you) as its not something that someone would normally do which is why its there.

Apologies, but to elaborate my point rather than you think im having a go at you for doing it the way you have done is that a well known trick of fruadsters when they have someones details is to do small transactions to make sure there is money in there before they go for much bigger and profitable purchases which htey can then use for their own means, like UKASH or Western union money transfers.

Thanks everybody for all your answers. At least now I know it's not just a problem with my account.

I appreciate the explanation. Cheers. Normally do manage to put everything in one basket but in this case it was just poor planning and not thinking ahead ;)

I've had similar problems with Southern in the past, where they limited the number of tickets in the basket and then blocked the next purchase. Sadly, it ****es genuine customers off. I've never encountered such annoying measures on ebay or amazon; just good old Southern who go out of their way to make it difficult to do business with them. And it's not as if I was buying anything other than the same tickets I bought week in week out. I responded a discount offer by trying to buy several of my regular tickets for the coming weeks and suddenly I'm a fraudster. TOCs have so much to learn about e-commerce.

If you do a large number of individual transactions on PayPal or Amazon within a short space of time you will be blocked too. It's a fairly standard anti-fraud device.

You also can't take your ebay purchases to a ticket office and get them refunded to "the same" card, minus some admin fees.
