I'm trying to find out where I stand regarding P-coded (think that's the term) cancellations if I have Advance tickets bought several weeks ago. Seems a simple enough query but I haven't been able to find the definitive answer. Has anyone successfully claimed for a cancellation if they don't travel* due to the service they are booked on being pulled the night before?

(*I would still travel but on a different route with newly purchased tickets with a different operator, so effectively the TPE tickets would be redundant.)

If you are booked on a train that doesn't exist on the day of travel you may choose not to travel and to claim a full refund, yes. It doesn't matter if it's a P-code or a cancellation.

You can also choose to travel on the next (and usually previous) train to that time of the same TOC if you prefer.

Thanks, I hoped that was the case. It's a fairly long journey, TPE Lime Street to Stalybridge and another TPE to Scarborough. When I checked for the same journey yesterday, the 11:51 I was booked on from Stalybridge was cancelled, and so were the subsequent ones right up to 17-something. Didn't fancy several hours in Stalybridge and arriving at 8:00pm in Scarborough so I already hedged my bets and booked more tickets for a Northern only route. If my booked trains do run I will accept my losses.

Incidentally if the Journey Planner shows the Lime Street to SYB one is running but the SYB to SCA is cancelled would I be refunded for cancelling the whole journey?

Is this a through ticket, or if a split booked via Trainsplit or similar on one itinerary? If so yes. If not still technically yes, but you may need to argue a bit.

Why buy new tickets? There's usually ticket acceptance in place when tpe p codes, you may find you can travel on your original tickets on your alternate route and also be entitled to delay repay from tpe

Also remember for a refund if you so wish you approach the retailer who sold you the tickets

Different start point! That's the beauty of Merseyside, you do have options.

Well what a dilemma. All my booked trains are running on both my routes/sets of tickets. However from Lime Street the two previous Hulls and the previous Newcastle are all cancelled, with passengers on all of them being advised to take the 10:54, my first booked train! I have a seat reservation but it’s going to be a scrum.

The previous (to my connection at Stalybridge) Manchester Picc to Scarborough is also cancelled, so mine could be cosy!

All Northern running from Southport to Scarborough, but four changes and a later arrival. I genuinely don’t know what to do for the best.

Further edit: Decided Northern, can’t face TPE, and it’s less wasted money, and a new experience via some stations I haven’t been to before.

………………………………………………………….,

Well that was an experience. Suffice it to say 10/10 for Northern, 0/10 for TPE, purely on helpfulness and customer service, let alone reliability.

It’s a very long story of what happened today so I won’t bore you with it, but the fact that TPEassist on Twitter were totally inflexible, while the train and station Northern staff went out of their way to be helpful, the guard (going off duty) even spending 10 minutes on the platform at Man Vic checking my options, and escorted me to the gates to explain why I was there and get them to let me through, says it all.

Well done Northern, and another reinforcement of my gut instincts to avoid TPE at all costs in future. Thank goodness for the “exclude operators” facility on Trainsplit.
