Cracks have been found in two of the TransPennine Express Mk5As according to an email sent out to TPE staff. The damage is apparently similar to that found in other CAF fleets. 'We will continue to run Mk5a sets that have been checked and cleared. Where these cannot be used, they will be replaced with our Class 185 fleet, which may result in some short-formed services.'

Good job they’re not running that many MK-5As.

It’s almost a good excuse to enable them not to run them.

Has an NIR (National Incident Report) been raised?

Dear God how long will this take to sort out?
Certainly less time that it's taking Hitachi to sort out theirs... and I don't just mean because of the size of the fleets!

To be fair to CAF, they did manage to sort out the cracking issues in the Northern fleet pretty quickly. I do still wonder how much the rapid switch to lightweight so called track friendly bogies has created more issues than they are worth, particularly with our varying states of track.

Presume this is also likely to be found on the Caledonian Sleeper Mk5's at some point.

The 397s are what I’d be keeping an eye on at the minute. I’d be surprised if they’re immune from this if the Mark 5s are suffering, and the 397s are much more intensively used.

Looking at the banging about, I'd say 397s are far worse - I expected them to get cracks first before the coaching stock did. Quite why further orders were accepted after the Northern sets starting coming apart is beyond me. Wonder when will the West Mids & TfW sets fall apart? Do the Australians really know what they're letting themselves in for?

Well the Manchester to Cleethorpes diagram was a MK 5 set this morning according to RTT so they seam to still out and about, but then again they are so massively underutilised they can have sets stood down and still be ok

Now for several posts of deeply unfunny plays-on-words about what CAF stands for...

(Should anyone have forgotten, our friends from Northern Spain are not the only manufacturer to have suffered from quality issues relating to metalwork).

On the contrary, everyone likes a bit of light relief....We need it.

CAF seems to have issues with their rolling stock in general like the Urbos 3 where cracks appeared globally. Makes me wonder if the B23s are going to have similar issues down the line.

Doesn't look like any other sets have been out today to Scarborough.

Well it looks like the return 15:24 Cleethorpes to Liverpool was a Mk V apparently

In two cities which happen to be opposite sides of the planet, which isn't the same as everywhere

The Scarborough Line still has Jointed track, that's probably why the Cracks are apparently on MK5A and not the Mk5s or 397s

Id wager that has little/no effect - particularly if there is a relationship between bogie hunting and the cracking - it very rarely occurs on jointed track at speeds as low as 60mph, the natural up-down bounce of the joints has a tendency to disrupt any innate tendency of the bogie to hunt laterally.

It could also be a delay in the cracks appearing as the sets haven't been intensively used.

When the 195/331s got cracks they had been in intense service for a few years.

Rail Business UK has a lengthy interview with Chris Jackson, TPE Interim MD, which gives more information about the cracks.
A formal pan-industry incident report notice was issued following discovery of a crack on set TP01. The cracks and related abnormalities were found on the so-called ‘C slot’ where the yaw dampers and anti-roll bars are attached to the vehicle body. The incident report stated that ‘an abnormal narrowing of the C slot’ was found at wheel 7/8 of vehicle 12707. Subsequent inspections of more of the trainsets uncovered one more crack at a C slot and two more cases where the component had failed a dimensional check as a result of the narrowing phenomenon.
The operator and its partners are now assessing how to manage the wider problem on an ongoing basis. In the meantime, the MkVa vehicles are being given enhanced inspections. It is understood that a temporary spreader plate fitted around the C slots on some of the Class 195 DMU fleet operated by Northern is being evaluated as an option to mitigate the effects of cracking on the MkVa as well.
