Several 185s have spent time sidelined with missing driving cars as a result of collision repairs. Having a spare DT potentially means having all 13 rakes still in traffic when a set is damaged following an unexpected bovine incursion.....

The spare DT might equally never be called upon. The best balance for the maintenance regimes between the sets would be achieved by not using it.
Though surely if it sits unmoved in the depot for years before being required, it probably won't be fit to go straight out into traffic when the time comes that it is needed?

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but presumably at the very least it would need/have needed to complete the Fault Free Running?

It wouldn't have been accepted if the FFR hadn't been done.

Well no, but I wasn't sure if the actual spare (as opposed to the numerical spare) had actually done so yet, which is is why I wasn't sure which tense to use.

My main point was that if after the FFR is done it just sits in a siding, then I'd have thought it would need a fair bit of attention if it isn't needed in traffic until six years later. Then again this is the railway, so it equally wouldn't surprise me if by the time it's needed in a pinch it has already become the Longsight christmas tree!

That seems an excellent reason to keep it at Newport rather than at Longsight, so that it isn't used for spare parts.

I read somewhere that the spare driving trailer would be put into service after a while and the one it replaces becomes the spare, until that one replaces another one etc etc.

So they all take their turn as spare

What has? Is there any swapping of DTs other than 12814 for 12802? I haven't seen it reported.
I don't expect to see DTs swapped round, except for 12814, which is being swapped around to cover for any unavailable DT (maintenance, repair, etc). This started, as you say, with 12802 (early March I think). It'll be interesting, when 12802 returns from Newport, to see whether 12814 becomes spare, or 12814 swaps with another DT. Another possibility is that the returning 12802 replaces a DT other than 12814 - in effect creating another revised Mk5 set.

Yes, it is apparent what could happen.

However, the point I was making is that there is no evidence yet about the frequency with which these changes will be made. Did TP02 run in passenger service with 12802? The return of 12802 could be an if, rather than a when, as there is currently no evidence either way.

Evening, does anyone know the current location of TP10 please?

I have seen TP01+68022 on Longsight today, with another UID set+68 behind. TP05 + one more UID set on Gascoigne Wood sdgs. There is a UID set parked in Basford Hall, and another set In Warrington yard attached to a 68. I have also seen TP09+68025 TP11+68020 TP13+68019 TP02+68029(with 12814). TP04+68031 out also, and TP06+68025 (a set swap), but not seen. Any info on the missing sets please, presume

12802 has not run in passenger service. TP02 has only been formed with 12814 as the DTS since it was commissioned for service.

Thanks JonathanH.

I think we're agreeing with one another? The original poster suggested that 'the spare driving trailer would be put into service after a while and the one it replaces becomes the spare, until that one replaces another one etc etc'. This is what happened when 12814 swapped with 12802 - I'm not sure it matters whether set 02 had actually entered service or not with 12802 - which is why I responded as I did.

I hadn't picked-up on your point about frequency - from what we're seen so far - who knows? - unless there's some inside gen. Interesting note above querying whether 12802 had ever been accepted into service - can anyone shed any light on that? For the record, I first saw set 02 complete with 12802 on Longsight Depot on 02/07/19. Perhaps TPE's thinking has changed, and 12802 will be kept at Newport, as a ready source of spare parts for the other DTs - which could work so long as parts are replaced in a timely manner. But as you say, all speculation!

I see there's a diagram running today (and yesterday), beginning with 5D90 from Longsight to Lime Street, and then running ECS to York, return, and back to Longsight. Is this a resumption of staff training?

I was at York last week and saw 68024 with one of the sets. I could not see any number for the DTSO. Fortunately there was a driver (I assume at standing at the front exit) who told me it was Set 6. I assume then it will be 12806, is that correct? Also, how can you tell the numbers without asking please, did I miss it?

You would be correct. The only "odd one out" at present is set 2, which has 12814 as its DTSO. (12802 has replaced it as the spare)
The number is on the side of the coach, near the solebar.

You can tell the set number from the First Class carriage as that is where the GPS unit is located. The DTs can change eg. 12802/12814.
