booked train tickets via tpexpress site for a weekend in Glasgow yesterday morning and have this evening received a e-mail from then with a rough guide to Glasgow attached. Thought it was a nice touch. Do any other TOC do this?

I booked an AP single from KX to Newcastle in January as part of EC's January sale. Two days before traveling I received an email from them with a list of attractions in Newcastle.

I'm assuming this email is only sent if the ticket you've purchased is part of a special offer: I use EC's website as my main ticket purchasing site and this is the first such email I've received.

On the face of it, a nice and thoughtful bonus - certainly preferable to the mails that RedSpottedHanky send out - such as "Looking forward to your trip to Nuneaton?" or "We hope you enjoyed your trip to Gainsborough Lea Road". If I'd used the train to get to a funeral I wouldn't think it appropriate (in practice I know it's just the way it is now with automated (and cheap) messaging).

What you've described from TPE sounds fine, but I'm always uncomfortable with any assumption that journeys are for pleasure - they should limit themselves to selling tickets, and useful journey information.

ISTR that on the East Coast website there's a (non compulsory?) option to select if it's a journey for business/leisure/visiting family/etc. It may be they use that kind of thing to decide what (if any) email you receive.

The email about attractions Etc is recent. I get one for every EC trip now, only for their journeys, though I buy other tickets through them, as they use the same software/booking engine as TPE it is no doubt an upgrade to the software. Nice touch, though all I do is delete the email.

Must admit I giggled at this having received similar emails in the past. :D

This "little extra" would be a promotion paid for by the tourism/events office of the city concerned, not something FTPE or EC do out of the kindness of their heart.
