Right, so OK it was the "other" unit! Still ironically allocated to northern work either way, not exactly spreading the new identity across the network parked up in a siding in Sheffield.....
Yeah, it doesn't seem like the most appropriate use of the two specially liveried units!

Although, reading about their activities over the weekend, they do seem to roam far and wide: For 185123, it seems to have been to Glasgow on Friday, Cleethorpes on Saturday and then Blackpool on Sunday.

Will the northern 185s be liveried as Northern ?
As the units being hired to Northern are, AFAIK, selected indiscriminately from the whole fleet on a day to day basis, then I wouldn't have thought so.

All seems too sensible to me this, livery on refurb to cut costs business.

It will never catch on.

So until the end of last week, the Manchester Airport to Blackpool North services were TPE-operated using rolling stock on hire from Northern, but now they are Northern-operated using rolling stock on hire from TPE? :o

Manchester to Blackpool was Northern 156s hired to TPE. Now its 185s hired to Northern for Windermere and Barrow services. The Blackpools having also transferred to Northern.

First are apparently having difficulties trying to secure a maintenance contract for the other trains with the underlying reason being CAF aren't familiar with how the privitised UK industry works. Arriva are going to maintain the Northern CAF trains themselves.

The new livery seems to have been in abundance at Leeds over the past couple of days.

One of the two new trains was on my commute into work on the 07:21 from Dewsbury to Liverpool Lime Street on Wednesday 6th April. And yesterday Thursday 7th April one was also on the 16:41 to Hull from Piccadilly. I didn't look at the numbers because... well I don't.

What is the logic behind five car Class 80Xs for the new franchise. I am aware that a five car Class 802 is roughly the same length and has the same seating capacity as 2 x Class 185s. What I mean is were the nine car variants not considered at all? Previously I have been on 2 x Class 350 services with have been very busy and that was back in 2014/15.

Hearing murmurs of a rather complicated multi TOC deal to see TPE keeping a few 170s rather than being off to Chiltern as well, so situation could be a fair way off nailed down.

5-car IEPs are now a well-known quantity and will be in service around the country with GWR and VTEC before TPE gets them.
The GWR order for 5-car trains had options for more of the same, which is the core of the TPE order.
9-car IEPs would not fit in some key TPE stations (Manchester Airport/Oxford Road/Victoria/Salford Crescent and several other stations on their network.
With 5-car trains, you could double up to 10-car on some services (long platforms only), but longer trains could not double up.

The IEP design means that inserting more vehicles is possible, and the long production timescale means vehicles will be available if there is a business case.
After most of the current orders are in service, say by 2020, there might be scope to fine-tune train lengths.
But now, it's more a question of playing fairly safe until the new order settles in.
Remember that Network Rail's ability to extend station platforms is limited and takes an age to deliver.
Also, the costs are significant and you have to have an eye on the impact on premiums to DfT (who will have to OK an order for longer trains).

Just to add to LNW-GW's excellent points, the core of the route Manchester-York is going to have a significant increase in the number of trains per hour once we have all the improvement works around Manchester finished. Thus the number of people currently on 2 trains made of 6 185 carriages. (12 carriages worth of people) are likely to be spread on 3 eventually 4, trains of 5 car length (15 - 20 carriages). That is before any doubling up has happened.

Also worth noting none of the York trains will call at Stalybridge or Garforth and only 25% of them will call at Dewsbury, that will leave more room for passengers travelling between the main stations

The Hitachi trains haven't been ordered for services to/from Scotland via Preston, they are for North TPE. Although, we do know 60 electric carriages are being procured for services to/from Scotland via Preston even if we don't know what type of train they'll be yet.

Stalybridge is losing direct York services? I don't think that'll go down too well, I see people buying SYB-YRK returns a lot, especially on weekends. It's quick, easy, and a nice escape.

Good to hear TPE are going on quickly with signage - then again the number of stations they have to do is (I imagine) very low.
I hope they keep the Rail Alphabet.

Wonder if the same can be said of Northern - or will we still be seeing the red, green and cream of Regional Railways North West, and those awful purple signs in 2020?

Thursdays would have been 185123 as 185108 was on the South TPE that day (and on Friday)

Problem is I don't think it will have more seats than 2x 4 car Class 350/4s working in multiple - 460 seats (assumed to be 230 seats as per Class 350/3). The maximum length of IEP on 26m carriages would be 6 coaches to fit eight carriage platforms (20m vehicles x8) 156m v 160m - a rough approximation of 378 seats - assuming 315/5=63 per vehicle x6 vehicles.

Are tpe still outsourcing lots of staff, or are they going to get most of them in house? Also staff at major stations like Edinburgh would be useful for disruption. 1612 cancelled today only Virgin and scotrail staff to deal with them and god knows who was looking after the replacement bus for Lockerbie.

As pointed out above, the five car AT300s aren't replacing the 350s

Granted, but an Intercity style seating layout whether at AT300 or other operators equivalents will only be 6 vehicles at 26 metres or 8 vehicles at 20 metres you can see the disparity in seating numbers.

Noticed yesterday that Huddersfield has been done with what appeared to be new signs rather than just stickers over the old ones which often end up getting tatty very quickly.

Spotted this during the week, but Dewsbury still has FirstGroup logos aplenty, no rebranding at all there for either franchise.

Guessing here but it imagine Northern stoppers plus peak extras from TPE...

Unless the one semi-fast that runs East of Leeds (the Hull service) calls there too.

But the AT300s aren't replacing the Class 350s, they are replacing the 185s on TP North services to Newcastle not 350s on services to Scotland via WCML

Where an AT300 will probably have around 320 standard class seats and probably something like 24ish first class seats (maybe a little more maybe a little less). Compared with 154 standard class, 12 tip up and 15 first class seats on a single 185. So a five car AT300 is probably going to be bringing basically the same capacity as a six-car 185.

Not a bad uplift really when so many services are 3-car 185s!

Won't the service be increasing to hourly to both Edinburgh and Glasgow as well?

It seems to be hourly to Edinburgh via Newcastle, and hourly alternating between Glasgow and Edinburgh via Carlisle.
So we could well have 2 close departures from Edinburgh for Manchester in some hours, via the two routes (via Carlisle being the faster).
