It's important to remember that the AT300 design can have 20-26m carriage lengths. Pendolinos are 23.9m in their intermediate carriages. However, I somehow doubt an entirely new design of AT300 tilting derivative is going to be developed for a grand total of 12 5-car sets.

Why not? The A-train is a modular design, so it can be adapted to a variety of needs without too much grief, including, as you point out, different bodyshell lengths.

The first Hitachi tilt train order for Taiwan was for a grand total of six eight-car trains. The current order is for two more sets, so small orders don't appear to be an issue for Hitachi and they presumably made/are making a profit on both these orders. If the Class 800 bodyshell can be adapted to fit the UK tilt envelope without too much work then Hitachi may well be in with a shout for the 12 trains.

Having delved a bit deeper into the subject Hitachi has so far built more than 530 3ft 6in gauge tilt trains for Japan and Australia, often in small batches, including the Series 885 A-train which has a rather familiar look to its front end, though the bodyshells are much wider than a Class 800 thanks to the Japanese loading gauge despite the narrower track. Couple of pictures and a video of one in action here:

And GNWR (Arriva/DB) seem to think that Alstom will deliver another 4 six-carriage Pendolinos for their WCML open-access service. All 24 carriages would need to be compliant with the newest regulations, so why would Alstom not offer the same to other interested operators? If First have gone truly mad and ordered more LHCS then nothing would be off the table for any of their other plans.

But still no sign of a firm order for any Pendolinos although it is now almost eight months since ORR approved the GNWR Blackpool plan and these trains are also supposed to be operational in 2018. Don't forget this image that emerged from the Alliance stable in the past..

TPE have got a 350 in a new livery, similar to what they got delivered in. It went towards Preston on the 05:00 Piccadilly-Glasgow but I'm not sure if it was on the front or back

Thought they might have had some sort of special offer or free tickets available on their first day, like Scotrail did last year. Oh well.

That service is formed of 185123 today in the new colours. It's booked a 185 on Fridays.

Oh no, not another light grey based livery. :( A very minor point compared to the good news of a largely new train fleet bringing greatly increased capacity and improved on board facilities, mind, and even that pales into insignificance compared to the news mentioned above that the new Transpennine franchise will now offer proper beer and pork pies! ;)

2. BETTER FOOD, FRESH COFFEE - AND MANCHESTER BEER!

On many TPE services currently, food is available just five days a week. But that will be boosted to seven from Friday.

Also for the first time, fresh coffee will be served in both standard and first class.

There will also be Carluccio’s pastries and freshly baked pork pies on Manchester to Scotland services - both of which are free in first class.

Cakes and flapjacks from Lotties in Huddersfield and crisps from the Yorkshire Crisp company are also on the menu.

The icing on the cake will surely be the locally brewed Manchester beer from the Cloudwater Brewery.

The yellow end panel seems to have gone...
It's there on the picture I can see when I click on that link.

While it's not in the shape of a (f), it very much reminds me of the newer First bus livery. A bit cheap and washed out; I prefer rich, deep colours for rail liveries and interiors.

Looks much better without a yellow end, though.

I think coloured rather than grey doors would help a lot.

Apparently new seats with charging points at every seat, with significantly improved seating for First Class.

Would be interested to see precisely what they will improve - fake leather? I find the existing First Class seats very comfortable indeed, if perhaps a little flimsy in places.

Unprofessional ridiculous livery. It's like something from Cbeebies - kids tv for those wondering!

Tragic.

Ok, the twitter image didn't do it justice. Not as bad as I first thought / seen.

The 185's in this photo are being re-liveried with the new Northern livery, are they not?

No, from other images on the Manchester Evening News site, it is evident that one unit is 185108 and reasonable to assume that the other is 185123; the two units that have been launched in the new TPE livery today.

Really like the livery but hate the logo. :(
I like the logo, but not the corporate spiel that comes with it:

It takes the form of the ‘north star’ - the guiding light showing you the way to Greater Manchester.

I see the 16-18 thing is just off Advances. That's going to cause confusion. I hope they are lenient on 16-18 year olds who have bought child tickets today based on the publicity.

Well as far as the additional diesel capacity goes given Tony Miles on WNXX who has I believe already has had a briefing from TPE is showing pictures of an Irish Loco Hauled set built by CAF as a hint, and also what other have said that's a very strong hint of CAF loco Hauled and presumably 68's, a pretty bizarre choice if you ask me but is allegedly due to manufacturing capacity constraints, presumably if Hitachi could have turned out some AT300 's quicker they would have all been AT300's

Also in the past he's said trying to get good maintenance contracts from CAF can be challenging and he hinted yesterday the trains are confirmed but the maintenance contracts still need to be finalised, which is why there's been no announcement yet.

As others have asked, why are these allowed to run without the yellow front?

They are keeping the yellow front. The yellow front is presumably a vinyl applied over the base coat. The old yellow fronts had the First logo on them, which is being removed as part of the generic livery.

As far as the new Transpennine livery is concerned, they're not.

It's the presence of modern high intensity headlights that allows the exemption from the standard, although based on driver9000's post upthread I'm not sure whether 185s meet the necessary criteria to allow them to run without yellow front ends (I would have thought that they could?).

They aren't going to. Photos of the launch unit show it still has a partially yellow front

However in the general case, once unit or loco headlights are up to the latest specification, then yellow front panels are no longer required because the rail group standards have been updated.

(I wrote panels specifically because the tendency of livery designers for the last few years is to use far more yellow than is actually required, the absolute requirement is only for a 1 sq metre panel. There is no requirement for a yellow front end.)

They will need to be fitted with lighting like the 68s and Thameslink units first.

No. That is the Base blue colour applied when built.

Is it just me or do British trains look rather odd without the yellow front. Just because they don't have to be yellow doesn't mean they can't be yellow.
