In Scotland some taxi drivers have even been contracted by the Ambulance Service it's that bad, although for non-emergency driving.

Unable to source taxis from Liverpool to Edge Hill let alone Liverpool to Manchester.

To do so would require spare drivers from both Man Pic (who sign Ardwick but not beyond York) and either Liverpool (who sign Newcastle) or York or/and Newcastle.

Do bare in mind that many drivers are currently either traction training, working their own services or training new drivers, or spare at home which limits shift hours (reduced by an hour minimum to allow for travel into work) limiting the amount of spare staff available to crew said trains.

Rightly or wrongly it was deemed unachievable.
Liverpool drivers don't sign Newcastle. The conductors do but the drivers only sign to York and Manchester Airport (they previously signed to Scarborough but lost the work a few years back before the new trains arrived trains arrived. There was potential contingencies to have explored but alas it didn't happen.

5S07 works from Edge Hill sidings to Liverpool Lime Street and then forms 9S07 (07:24 Liverpool Lime Street - Edinburgh Waverly)

That unit then does work between Edinburgh Waverly and Newcastle Central before finishing at Craigentinny depot that evening.
Although on Saturday, 9S07 terminated at Newcastle due to engineering work north of Newcastle - and formed 9M22 (1045 from Newcastle to Lime Street).

The usual unit forming 9M22 ends up back at Edge Hill having worked 9M38 (1843 Newcastle to Lime Street). However, this was also cancelled?

I’m led to believe Taxi’s were being provided for passengers for CLS earlier in the day.

The rule in business is to know where and when to scrimp and save and where and when to spend the big money. Knowing when to economise and when to be generous is one of the rules of life.
Tell that to Boeing and their 737 MAX.

That would only have been an issue for the 05:54. The 07:54 could have been resourced by Liverpool crew starting in Manchester with said crew travelling passenger to Manchester on another service.

You would still need a spare Manchester driver to bring it off Ardwick to Victoria and you’d also potentially be losing driving hours trying to get said Liverpool crew to/from the train

A taxi from Liverpool to Manchester could actually be easier to source. A longer journey like that running on the meter will be much more appealing to the taxi companies than a fixed fare short hop within Liverpool. I don't know which companies TPE use for their taxis therefore couldn't confirm if this was the case with the companies they use, but I know some Taxi firms actively prioritise longer journeys on the meter when they're short of drivers, with the fixed fare short hops on company accounts getting lowest priority, even below supermarket customers wanting to travel a few hundred meters down the street with their shopping.

Most (if not all?) crews that sign Newcastle also sign 185s so that shouldn't be an issue.

Either deemd unachievable, or not considered. Given the lack of any effort to provide even a taxi for those at Chester-le-Street left stranded by the cancellations, I'm inclined to think TPE didn't consider it.

I would prefer to use pool cars if they were an option, I'm definitely not a fan of taxi journeys during work hours.

It's sounds like an option to explore as the use of taxis is obviously an issue, especially short distance usage to depots.

That again would be a TOC own goal if their purchasing department has screwed the taxi contract rate so far down that they become last priority when taxis are busy.
It's long been a thing that taxi drivers avoid contact work - many of them are self employed and they don't get paid for the contract jobs until after it's been submitted to their office, invoiced and paid for. If they do a meter job they get the money effectively straight away.

Late-night work taxis used to be a nightmare for this as the drivers would visibly drive close enough to the contract pick up point that the GPS would say they were there, and then just report to the office that nobody was there and then carry on to do another job instead.

So it's not necessarily about the contract with the taxi company causing drivers to not get allocated, but more likely the contract between the taxi company and their drivers which mean they don't want to do the contract work so don't accept the jobs.

I know a few taxi drivers that like the consistency of contract jobs, it pays their settle and radio. Suppose it's each to their own, traincrew are easier to deal with than drunken idiots
