Are all the TPE trains getting this livery or just the 350s?
It'd be silly to just have 10 trains in one livery and the rest in the old one, although it does differentiate electric and diesel.

Well, as they're currently running around in Railfreight Grey, this will being them in line with the 185s. It's not new at all.

It's inaccurate to refer to them as 'freed-up' 170s though, because they haven't been released from TPE by new stock- just been poached (albeit legally) thanks to the franchising debacle. TPE (or Rail North, or the DfT) will have to find replacement stock or services will have to be cancelled- trains aren't normally withdrawn before their replacements are delivered or even ordered!

Ah, I see. Does this mean that TPE will have to source other stock? And if so, is it most likely to be 158's?

If only Chiltern would go elsewhere to source their "required" stock. Why don't they take a leaf out of the Northern Rail book which saw all the new trackwork connections up and ready to accept the new Blackburn -Copy Pit line - Manchester Victoria service.....then a "cooling-off" period of nine months before even thinking of running train services over the track.

As far as I am aware, yes. They might be able to cope simply by removing all diagrammed double-sets (both 185s and 350s) but that would leave dozens behind at every station. 158s would seem to be the obvious solution as I think they can keep to time on the Hull and South TPE routes, though where they'd come from is another matter entirely.

That's obvious, GA will be made to take on the 317/7s, to break up 2 rakes of Mark 3s into 8 2 car sets, which in turn will be coupled with Top and tail 37s,47s and whatever other 1960s locks are available, to free 8 of their 9, 156s which will transfer to FGW, to free up all 8 of their remaining pacers. Said pacers can then be transferred to Northern to free up 8 158s for TPE. ;)

I mean this is as sensible as any thing else proposed so far ;)

In the earlier infrastructure improvements that Chiltern have made, and I think in this one too, there has been a complicated financial device in which, when the improvement is in use, Chiltern pays Network Rail a higher track access charge, which they can afford to make as a result of the higher revenue their improved service attracts. (I do not understand the full workings of this.) Presumably, for this arrangement to work, Chiltern have to start running the new service as soon as the infrastructure improvement is complete, and can't afford a period when all the money has been spent on it but no trains are operating.

What services are the 350s on at the moment?

They're currently working TPE's only electrified route: Manchester Airport to Scotland.

Who can say really! But stock which is suitable, and exists in suitable quantities is probably limited to 158, 159, 170, 171 and 175. Some 3 car 170s would be rather nice ;)

Do we have a full picture then? The pic of the guy putting some vinyls on near a cab appears to be bog-standard Dynamic Lines.

As you can see in the photo linked to by Manchester77, it's not the bog standard version of the Dynamic Lines rather a new one where they are surprisingly more prominent. But rather smart though.

British Rail design standards written in the 1960s, "It is not the intention that corporate identity shall submerge individual or local character, rather it will stand as evidence of a guaranteed standard service".

I've always disliked First's colours and identity - they ruin stations by painting modest grab rails bright pink and railings a mix of the two. It's a shame there were no standards for graphic design. It is an eyesore, and makes the railway look pathetic.

I think the announcement is that TPE are using TnT 47s on a Liverpool-Scarbourogh train this weekend.

Whilst there appears to be speculation that 158's will be poached from Northern, what else comes off lease in time for when the 170's go to LM ? Could we end up with something better. ?

Scotrail's and Anglia's 3 car 170s have leases which expire this year. <D

Indeed. It also occurs to me that ScotRail have a little slack on their fleet, and Anglia have the battery 379 trial coming up... Im also not convinced LM won't have something, if only a couple of 153s to give up.

Apparently fgw getting a 159 for the afternoon Brighton from timetable change so that might make a swt unit less likely

So, what else is available ?

Porterbrook have a list of lease end dates here which may be a couple of months out-of-date: http://www.porterbrook.co.uk/pages/LeaseEndDates.htm

Most other lease expiry date will coincide with the current franchise end dates.

There's been guarantees on some classes that they will remain in the same area even beyond the end of the current franchise. The 333s and 379s have such guarantees. (In the case of the 333s it's only that they remain on services serving West Yorks not that they remain on the same lines.)

What's interesting is the 158s, 321/9s and 323s have had CCTV fitted which TfGM and Metro have funded* and a condition of that is that if the units are removed from their respective areas that replacement units will have CCTV fitted at no cost to the PTE from the outset. Apparently the ex-LM 150s have CCTV fitted but the systems aren't activated. I wonder what the cost would be of reactivating the systems on those units or if it'll be cheaper to fit new CCTV to other trains (if there's compatibility issues.)

* Obviously Metro funded the 321/9's CCTV and TfGM funded the 323's CCTV. Metro funded most of the 158's CCTV but TfGM funded the CCTV on 158s operating Victoria to Leeds services. The 333s have Metro funded CCTV as well but Metro have had a guarantee that those units will remain on West Yorkshire services in the long term.
