Amazingly it’s been ages since I’ve been on a class 185, so I don’t know the answer.

I see that catering is only provided in the “front three carriages”. Are the front three carriages always ABC or are they sometimes EFG? Just trying to work out if my reservation will be in the catered part of a 6-car from Manchester Airport…

I'm pretty sure they ABC can be at either end, I don't think they swap carriage labels between services. On the plus side EFG are usually unreserved so if they are leading you can almost certainly find a suitable seat in first class there.

6 car 185s should be labelled as ABC in the front train and EFG in the rear irrespective of direction of travel with the labels changed over at the turnaround location. Since December all seat reservations are reserved in ABC with EFG being unreserved.

I assume you are on a Redcar/Saltburn service from the airport in which case the catering trolley boards the front 3 carriages at Manchester Piccadilly.

Thanks, that makes sense. I am, heading to Newcastle so on the Redcar train from the airport as far as York. Also means it’ll be harder to notice at Piccadilly if the trolley gets in the other portion.

Many Cleethorpes to Liverpool services are 6 car these days. The trolley only seems to operate between Sheffield and Stockport or Piccadilly.
