This working has been operating for about five weeks Monday to Friday.
Always a 185 the unit does two returns from Doncaster to Leeds then retires to York
late evening.
Can anyone suggest what is going on?
TPE and 185 units have never worked this route in regular service.

Possibly driver route training for moving 802s to Doncaster Detachi depot?

Route learning to allow TPE drivers to get 802s on and off Doncaster IEP depot. At the moment they have to use freight drivers to do it.

I'm confused, as Colton to Doncaster direct is used on a night, and I assume, morning as well. Do these really have other drivers supervising?

They've already learned it, that was the first step. York drivers are now learning the diversionary route from Doncaster to Leeds, which has to be used from time to time when the direct route is blocked.

The evening ECS (5P42) runs direct to Doncaster and can now run without a GBRf route conductor.

The morning ECS (5P08) does IEP-DON-LDS-DON-YRK (the DON-LDS-DON bit being for future route retention), hence it still needs a route conductor until DON-LDS is learned by a sufficient number of drivers.

No, they don't sign the line to Hull so it would be difficult to keep up route knowledge without a 'wasted' ECS. Generally blocks are coordinated to ensure that major depots are always accessible from one direction.
