TPE 170s - Update

Went out yesterday to try to get a ride on one of the TPE 170's. Went
for the 0942 Manchester - Hull booked as two 170s according to JsT's
info, from Huddersfield at 1017. It wasn't though! Two 158 sets.

Got straight off at Leeds and saw a 170 (or maybe two sets, I can't
remember), doing the 1040 to Manchester, 0937 from Hull, so got straight onto that. My first trip on a 170.

Managed to get a better photo this time, not bad for off my phone I don't think. 170301:



Not sure what I think of them just yet. Legroom wasn't great, slightly better than the 158 but not as good as the 185s.

I note there is first class at both ends, but one has been deregulated. I'll have to remember that for future.

I wish Northern would get some proper trains, some 170s would be nice, not sure about route availability though.

Does this mean the seats have changed? cos as far as I know 170s/168s/171s all have really nice seating, better than 158s and 185s....

I think the seats are still the old SWT ones aren't they? I think the thing about 185 seats is that you can put your feet underneath the seat in front, which dramatically increases leg-room, whereas on units such as 158s there are often annoying obstructions such as heaters, electrical boxes etc.

Capacity of them is not enough - that much is certain. I travelled 13.40 off Leeds to Huddersfield and it was full, fair few standing, FC was empty! They are a little slow off the mark but otherwise they are a reasonable bit of kit. The train crew were saying they are only here for a year or so - not quite sure what to make of it or whats coming instead. (180's?) Probably just the usual canteen talk.

Went to see 170302 at Piccadilly this affy. Looks very nice indeed. I would have had a look inside and taken some pictures, but it was in and out very quickly!

Got another trip on a 170. 185 from Hudds to Hull, off at Leeds, then over the bridge to platform 16 for a 170 from Hull to Manchester. Went in the deregulated first class this time, seats much nicer than in standard! Funny how most people run off when they see the seats, thinking its first class.

I notice there's a sign at Hull advertising the new Class 170s, which states that all will be 'refurbished to 185 standards' by the end of the summer. I wonder what this will involve? I'm guessing re-covereing the seats into First colours and removal of the declassified first class but does anybody know any more about this?

Also, the diagrams seem to be a bit hit and miss at the moment. The 1802 Hull-Manchester was being worked by a 185 the other night. Is this unusual or the norm for this service?

My guess would be new grab handles (light green colour)
Removal of 1 end of 1st class
Complete new seat covers same as on 185
New carpets throughout
New table tops same as on 185

Today (3rd April) seen 303 & 304 on a Hull train but 304 was died in tow.

Was on one a few days ago. As we were going through Morley tunnel between Dewsbury and Leeds, all the lights went off! Turns out the guard had pressed the wrong switch, apparently they are labelled incorrectly! He then came out of the rear cab muttering something about wanting his old trains back.

haha that happened to me once as well, but leaving Leeds they went off straight away and didnt come back on. Conductor came out of the cab half way through Morley and was like "where have the lights gone?!". The cab light and saloon lights are labeled wrong
