Hi

I am thinking of moving to Totteridge or Finchley, and wonder what the northern line is like in the morning and evening. It used to have a bad reputation, but is that still justified ? Is it packed coming from Leicester Square at 6-00 pm ?

Pretty packed, yes, probably no different to the average. You will have a slight chance of getting a seat at Camden Town though if you wait at Leicester Square for a High Barnet train.

Thanks. I have another question if you don't mind. Do the trains leave from Totteridge according to the timetable in the morning ? Can you time your arrival to get the Charing Cross branch train direct to Leicester Square ? If you arrive randomly, it seems that you might have to wait 10 minutes sometimes, and that for a City train.

I live in High Barnet (next stop up) and it tends to run to time in the weekday mornings. When I'm on earlies, I will catch the 6:19 bus to the station and my train will usually leave between 6:25-8 getting me into Camden Town station at about 6:50-3, leaving me with a short 5 minute walk to work.

In the evenings it's busy, but less so after 8pm. Sometimes when I'm on earlies I will go home via the North London line to Highbury and Islington then an FCC train to East Barnet and get the bus from there to home as it's less stuffy than the Northern Line in the evenings.

I take it you're working near Leicester Square? If you were working in the city then I would have suggested you get an FCC train from Oakleigh Park which is only a stones throw from Totteridge and Whetstone. It will be handy to use anyway if the Northern Live is buggered in anyway.

Thanks. I'll be working near Kingsway, so Covent Garden is the nearest. Maybe I should think about FCC to Finsbury Park, and Piccadilly Line from there. It's interesting that you mention FCC, because I was worried about bad reports they were getting for overcrowding and cancellations. But people seem to think it's ok from Oakleigh Park, and maybe preferable to the tube. And I notice that your tube journey time from High Barnet in the morning is 35minutes, while the TFL timetable quotes 25 minutes !

Anyway thanks for your help. It's golden information because we're not even in London yet, but looking where to live.

Yeah, sometimes it takes 25, sometimes a bit more. Depends on whether the driver has a problem or there's a slight delay. But the rough ball park is D: 6:25 A: 6:50 at Camden.

FCC is useless to me for commuting at the moment anyway as the North London line is down between Gospel Oak and Stratford.

My son tells me, there will be some line closures on the Northern line, in the Finchley, Mill Hill, Barnet areas, during July, for maintainance.

There will (and probably quite a lot more to follow during the Northern line resignalling), but they won't affect the OP's journey which is at normal commuting times.
