Or to be precise lack of Platform 1 , it’s always confused me that there is Platform 2 services to either merdian water and Stratford.
Platform 3 main line to Liverpool Street / Stratford and platform 4 for services to Cambridge etc.
No platform 1 at all. Why not just have platforms 1-3 rather than 2-4.

Because there is a theoretical plan to add another platform, so rather than renumber them twice they were renumbered when the extra platform was added a few years ago. Meridian Water is the same

If they had started from the west, then the "existing" platforms could have been 1 (to Cambridge) and 2 (to London), the new platform 3 (to Stratford etc) 3, with the future 4th platform, 4.

Originally the Liverpool Street platform was number 1 and the Cambridge platform was number 2, so they would have needed to renumber it regardless of what number was chosen for the additional platform.

There is, and never was, a plan to add another platform. Two or three platforms, perhaps…

Isn’t there some sort of general convention to number up lines (to London) with lower platform numbers and down lines (in this case to Stansted Airport and Cambridge with higher numbers. There are a few exceptions to this rule but broadly most stations seem to follow this convention.

Close to London that seems to be the convention.

Further up the WCML (for example), that definitely isn't the case (for example, Nuneaton, Rugby etc where they seemed to be numbered from west-east from a main station entrance on the west side, and Crewe which was originally numbered 1-6 from west to east).

This was a Chris Green thing in the Network SouthEast era. Hitchin and Welwyn Garden City had their platforms renumbered.
