The interesting part is going to be north of Newcastle where the A1 is just a normal A road, full of speed cameras, that can zap trucks if they are doing more that 40mph - not that there is many trucks about on a weekend.

Is clarkson actually traveling by train in a race rather than by car, seing as he seesm to win most of the races then hopefully it might bring some good luck to tornado.

I know if clarkson is on the train it will win since he never looses well part from the cross london race, feel sorry for james may though since he seems to like stuff like steam engines, what to say he is going to go deliberatly slow to let tornado win.

i certainly wasnt expecting that clarkson to be on the train, cant emagine his face if tornado wins lol

The reason why Clarkson always (except cross London race ) is that cars are much easier to travel anywhere in.

Audi S4 against rock climbers? Er, lost.
Fiat Panda versus marathon runner? Lost.

I do see a pattern emerging, the only challenges he's lost are to the supposed under dogs, when you pit him against equal or better he triumphs. Great advertising for the A1, must go some way to the 800k loan needed to finish it

Mindyou, one imagines that, especially with it being for "commercial"* purposes, and it being a special secret squirrel charter and all, that they might, perhaps, have asked first?

Will be interersting to see the finished article.

I'm willing to bet that if they've spotted any spotters/photters, then there WILL be mocking. Hell, he'll proabably insult spotters anyway. It's what Clarkson does.

The car won, it was sitting outside the Balmoral when Clarkson went inside (followed him up, will get the footage up later) Didn't see the bike at all though.
It was good fun though.

Just surfing YouTube and found Tornado's trip and this forum. Love how the grape vine works! Guess I just have steam in the blood!

So thanks to all the posters and for your long post.

Great to see Tornado getting good publicity - it all helps to pay off the $800K debt. Top Gear is seen all over the world. After seeing all this, I'm going to chuck in $50 a month to the A1 Trust!

From the vids I've seen and from what I've read, Tornado seems an absolutely excellent machine. Even at max speed it just seems to purr along......... like a Singer sewing machine or Rolex watch! The crisp definition of the exhaust under power at high speed says it all! A just reward for 18 years hard work. I love the idea - you have a vision, lots of people say it is impossible and then you battle away, have your ups and downs, persist and make it happen. Inspiring on so many levels - much more than just about being a steam enthusiast.

I really hope that the A1 trust gets 90 mph certification. They seem to be doing everything in a really measured and thoughtful way, testing each step fully. Smart thinking. It doesn't look like the engine would need to be extended in any way at all to cruise along at 90 and the track testing done(hammer blow etc etc) seems to have shown very good results. Although I could see how the 75 limit may be more of a policy barrier rather than purely a engineering/safety issue, Tornado seems to have been so well engineered that it must be well within safety limits, even at 90. Provided Tornado is within limits, it would reflect very creditably on all involved if certification were given.

Lastly, nice forum guys. May post from time to time - if I have anything relevant to say from as far away as here.
