Tornado to turn blue..!

The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has announced that No. 60163 Tornado is to be repainted from its current Brunswick Green livery into Express Passenger Blue with the early BR Crest on the tender.

The repaint will be carried out at Southall by the same team of Ian and Dan Matthews who applied the current and original liveries, and will be undertaken during the first part of the locomotive's winter maintenance in October/November this year, when it would have been due a repaint anyway. The original Peppercorn class A1s carried four liveries during their short service lives (Apple Green with ‘British Railways on the tender, Express Passenger Blue with the BR Crest on the tender and Brunswick Green with both Crest and later BR Emblem on the tender).

Speaking at the annual convention of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, Mark Allatt, chairman, said: “We have long promised that Tornado will carry all four historic liveries during her first period of operation. Tornado will therefore carry Express Passenger Blue with the BR Crest on the tender following her winter maintenance at Southall depot. This will be for a limited period only as the Tornado ‘brand’ is very much as an Apple Green locomotive and this will remain her ‘core’ livery.”

The Trust has also confirmed that £150,000 has been ring-fenced towards the repayment of the £500,000 bearer bond, which is due before the end of 2016 - the last remaining debt associated with the construction of the locomotive. The Trust are looking to promote three tours with the locomotive in 2013, from King's Cross to Edinburgh on 8th June 2013, from Sheffield to Carlisle, via the S&C, on 25th September 2013, and a circular from Newcastle via Carlisle and Edinburgh, on a date to be announced.

Elsewhere, background work is progressing on the Gresley class P2 feasibility study with the first phase of modelling work completed, and a significant part of the next phase underway. This work will provide the data and information to allow a decision to be taken on whether it is a viable project.

Well well well, the mercurial 60163 is soon to turn blue, what do you think about it? Will it suit the loco? Is it the right colour?

Personally, I like the idea, and look forward to photting it with it's new look..

It should look interesting in BR blue, it did suit express locomotives very well indeed. However I think it's a shame to say goodbye to brunswick green for now.

King Edward II "BR Blue" - what was the proper name for that colour? - rather than Rail Blue, I'd assume. Rail blue would be bizarre.

Ah, rail blue was what I was thinking of, I know that one is Monasteral blue

I have, and remain to, call it BR primary passenger blue. It was applied to the largest passenger locos in the early days of BR, before all passenger locos reverted to brunswick green.

As the Railway Herald article names it, the livery that Tornado will carry is commonly known as Express Passenger Blue. I think that "Tornado" will look superb in that livery, and I am extremely thankful that we will have one less British Railways brunswick green steam loco roaming the rails. The brunswick green really is an uninspiring scheme that is given far too much exposure, which admittedly is understandable when you appreciate the generation that many of the leading lights in railway preservation today have come from.

With that said mind, I haven't actually had the opportunity to see "Tornado" in brunswick green during the short period that it has carried it! I'm glad to hear that it will be returning to apple green livery in the future, the livery that suits it best IMO.

It's also interesting to hear that progress is continuing to be made with regards to the P2 project

A non story as far as I am concerned - The a1 Steam Locomotive trust have always said Tornado will carry all four liveries carried by the A1 class. So far we have had Apple Green & Brunswick green. (and National Express gray ) Now if they painted it corporate with largo logos blue THAT would be a story

That looks like the darker blue than the KE2 version, the one the Merchant Navies got as well as the ex-LNER engines. I agree, that did look rather nice matched with the early coaching stock livery ( I'm not going to call that anything for fear of more arguments... ). Now if only there was a suitably painted rake about.

Although... talking of paint arguments, it wasn't ever officially called Brunswick, was it?

My Dad calls that blood and custard for some reason, im sure it was carmine and cream officially.
I think that express passenger blue would sit well on Tornado, from picures I have seen its a rather nice livery.

Yep, commonly known as "blood and custard" but officially, as far as I know, referred to as carmine and cream. If only BR had stuck with that livery for coaching stock and express passenger blue for passenger locomotives, then steam era British Railways would have had a good deal more colour than when they retreated back to the safety of dull and drab brunswick green locos and maroon coaching stock (Although I don't dislike the maroon carriage livery - It's quite a pleasing, muted hue). That is, if you could see any vestiges of the livery underneath the dirt and grime!

Eh? I don't follow. As a point of needless trivia, the official title of the "black" colour used by BR for the Intercity swallow livery was "falcon grey".

IIRC there were two ... red and off-white, let's call it, liveries? they did look smart, but I bet they were a pig to keep neat in steam days with employment issues. Maroon was ok, but if you pick a random 60s photo I bet you won't find two the same colour!
