Very nice indeed, Tornado is one of the highlights of the year that's for sure.

I noticed the blog mentioned carbon footprints of steam locos, and no doubt some (uninformed) person will mention this, so I thought I'd do some quick back of the envelope calculations.

A typical LNER A4 would use about 39.08lb of coal per train mile. (Taken from British locos of the 20th century, OS Nock)

Emissions from 1lb of coal is around 2.4 pounds of carbon.

Therefore an A4 emits around 39.08 x 2.4 = 93.79lbs of carbon per mile or 42, 542 grams.

Divide by 400 passengers = 106.3 grams per mile per passenger.

As a comparison a Toyota Pirus is around 150 grams per mile with one person in.

So a fully loaded steam railtour with an A1 on the front would probably much more efficient than the latest hybrid car with the average load of 1.5 people in. So they aint that bad!

Or for the kind of car that the enviromentalist complainers usualy drive, a range rover sport or porche cyane turbo S, 700g/km ;)

On that topic for a second, pepole using electric cars, where do they think that electric comes from, 33% of it comes from coal (only 20% of that (7% total) is fitted with FGD and Env. Waste and Biomass incineration, because you need FGD to burn petcoke (Flue Gas Desulphurisation), petcoke is a high sulphur waste product of the petrolium industry. 32% of it comes from Combined Cycle Gas Turbines, Bascialy steam generating jet engines. I think it's about 11% from nuclear power, and a full 5% comes from Open Cycle Gas Turbines and DIESEL GENERATORS!

We are currently speaking to the A1 loco group about what we will be producing to raise money for the Tornado!!!

I will update as soon as I have any details.

Some of the items on www.railwaycovers.co.uk may give you an idea of the sort of items but I hope to have exact details very soon!!!
