Torbay Express Light Engine Movements

Does anyone know the headcodes of the light engine movements from Kingswear to Paignton and back, where the loco refuels and gets water?

Do the P&DR* use headcodes? Or do you mean the lamp code, which I suppose, if they worried about such things, they'd use the light engine code.

Well not literally 'head' code, but the TOPS code for example 0Z51. The reason I ask is because I believe that the P&DR is on NR lines anyway and normal trains at Paignton have to navigate the sidings (which are also passed through by steam trains) to to turn the train around or change platforms.

Thanks for clarifying that, the loco serviced at Paignton last Sunday though, as I saw it heading there through Goodrington at 14:00 (waiting at a signal for about 15 minutes) and it left Paignton a few hours later. The loco must have turned at Churston before heading to Paignton as it was facing the right direction.

I find that happens a lot whenever I'm down that way. Every time I've been down there for the last 2 years, it's been cancelled for one reason or another (one time last year it was because of the World Cup ), or the steam loco failed and they bunged a 67 on. Albeit a red one.

yes, they go up to Paignton for coal, and then down to Churston to turn usually.

The PDSR is separated from NR metals by Paignton South Ground Frame. Goodrington Sidings can only be accessed from the mainline, however the most easterly line is the running line for the PDSR.

Can't see why they would use headcodes, the whole line is controlled from one panel in Brittania Crossing Box near Kingswear and only ever has two trains running on it at a time.

It was cancelled,they said owing to low bookings, I was booked on it, I was surprised as it was on the Bank Holiday weekend, which is the only day I can do that train, as I can travel to Bristol on the Saturday, do the steam train on Sunday and go back home on Bank Holiday Monday. Hopefully I will be able to do it next year.

I'm beginning to wonder about the Torbay Express, frankly. They do seem to come up with some *hmmm* excuses/reasons for cancellations. Like you said, if they can't get enough on a Bank holiday?

Isn't it run by the same company as Pathfinder Tours, who seem to cancel all the time as well?! :roll:

They are the railtour operators, they SHOULD know what will sell and what won't!

I Think Torbay Express Ltd is operated by Pathfinder, not sure if they are the same as Compass Tours as well. I think one problem is that these tours were orig operated by Past Time Trains until 2 or 3 years ago and their prices were quite alot cheaper also RTC sometimes have a steam tour from Bristol on the same day which are cheaper, so the market is diluted somewhat. It is such a shame as the Route of the Torbay Express along the seawall at Dawlish is beautiful. Ironically, I see I see on Torbay express Website that they have added another coach to their trains on 4 & 18 Sept., due to high demand.
