top + tail loco braking

this may seem obvious but when a loco pulls a rake of carriages it's vacuum or air supply provides stopping power for the lot. what happens when a loco switched off at the rear is part of the consist? if it were on, then IT would be the provider of air for braking. so does it get switched to some state by the driver to accept air braking from the coach it is coupled to (via the lead loco)

In the case of a 66, when running Top and Tailed, the air is provided by the loco that is being driven. In the case of the rear loco, this can either be completely shut down and thus acting just like another wagon or carridge or it can be running but must be isolated.

ok. it's just that i happened 2 pop on the cardiff to taunton service about a month ago and had a 67 + 3 mk2 intercity coaches + 67. i wondered at the time, considering the rear 67 was off, if the rear loco's wheels had any braking applied to them as it was "engine off"

so i assume then like i think GB suggested, that the loco is isolated. so then there must be some sort of control in the cab that mechanically "isolates" the on board compressor and allows the loco to accept "air control" from an outer source. i.e. the coach pipes it's coupled to

Historically locomotives had brakes which were operated separately to those on the train.

A proportional valve was fitted which when then controlled the brake application on the locomotive.

A locomotive on its own could not stop a train at full speed, indeed the locomotive brakes were normally very poor which was why they were restricted below line speed when running light.

Originally when a locomotives was shut down it became a "swinger" in that it had no brakes, only through pipes for the vacuum/air brake, and thus it required a "rider".

"Multiple unit" working did not result in any problems because the locomotive control pipes/cables were coupled between them but it did mean that only locomotives with compatible systems could couple. Those which had incompatible system could run but had to be manned either under power or if dead with a "rider"

That is the origin of Blue Star, Red Circle, etc coupling codes on locomotives.

Following an accident at Dorridge, when a failed train was propelled into the loop but ran through the stops at the end because the Driver could not control the train brake, a modification knoiwn as AFT )Assistance - Failed Train) was fitted. This was used when the train was assisten in rear and which allowed the Driver on the leading locomotive to make a brake application.

Obviously matters have moved on since those times, but it explains why locomotives were never hauled around at the rear of trains until relatively recently.

During the 1970s and 1980s the OHL construction trains on The Midland Suburban Electrification Scheme were specailly authorised to run with a locomotive at the rear under special operating instructions.

Plus, of course, with the demise of station pilots, loco release points/loops etc top'n'tail has become a necessity for most loco hauled operations, with units, push-pull and HST sets not requiring those facilities.
