TOC's Timetables At Stations

Could someone please tell me what are the legal requirements at railway stations with displaying timetable posters.

We have an ongoing issue where one TOC is refusing to put up another TOC's timetable poster at their stations but saying it is covered by putting the destinations on a A-Z board of departures.

Are they allowed to do this ? :(

This wouldn't be TPE refusing to put the Brigg line times up at Barnetby would it?

I think that all times have to be displayed as the Caledonian sleeper timetables are on display at Crewe and Preston and Carlisle.

Spot on and Grimsby & Cleethorpes.

Its been a constant battle with TPE just to get this basic thing done. :(

Its not like it's going to take up much space either lol! I can't imagine many boarding the Caledonian sleeper at Preston or Crewe so it probably is a legal requirement.

Considering it's a small A3 poster, the response of TPE isn't really acceptable.

Especially considering one is displayed at Gainsborough Lea Road where the service doesn't even call ;)

Their franchise agreement also contains the following;

7.1 (b) The Franchise Operator shall publish at each Station, to the extent reasonably practicable, and in accordance with the ATOC Code of Practice on Presentation of Timetable Information, the times (as amended from time to
time) of all passenger trains departing from such Station (including for the
avoidance of doubt passenger trains operated by other Train Operators), the
times of arrival of all such trains at all other stations at which they call, and
details of the principal Connections at such other stations to other passenger
trains. For the purpose of this Clause 7.1(b) the “ATOC Code of Practice on
Presentation of Timetable Information” is the code of practice on presentation
of timetable information issued by the Association of Train Operating
Companies and in force from time to time or, in the absence of which, such
other code as the Authority may specify

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa.../TransPennine_Express_Franchise_Agreement.pdf

I note the phrase "to the extent reasonably practicable" - which is presumably what allows TPE to stick their head in the sand and ignore requests to display the Brigg line timetable.

This is a great piece of the agreement to be able to quote.
Does anyone know if there is a similar piece of legislation (or similar statutory notice) which applies to bus operators?

A slightly pedantic point, but could be important if you're trying to force a TOC to meet their responsibilities. The franchise agreement is neither legislation nor a statutory notice. It's a commercial contract between HMG and the TOC.

Looking at a "Good Practice Guide" produced by ATOC's Passenger Information Strategy Group, the requirement is merely that A-Z departure sheets MUST be produced for stations where more than one set of "Line of Route" posters would be needed to show the full service from that station. There is no requirement to provide "Line of Route" posters at all(!) in such cases.

Of course, as said Guide is not backed by legislation, there's not a lot ATOC can do to ensure compliance...

Have you seen the state of the noticeboards at EMT run Gainsborough Lea Road, a number have been missing for years ?

The reason the Brigg Line timetable is popped on Lea Road is to educated people that there is another station bang in the heart of the town.

You will find the A3 Brigg Line timetable posters plastered everywhere along the line, this is why were so angry with TPE, if people dont know that a service is there then they wont use it. :(

Yes, which makes it even more impressive that the timetable is displayed there.

Based on your previous successes, I'm sure you won't give up - it's about time they started advertising the additional destinations available to passengers in the Grimsby and Cleethorpes areas via the Brigg line. :)

FGW publish a combined Timetable Book which is available for sale at principal stations (the publication is not advertised, however) but not at Newport, Cardiff Cent or Swansea along their routes because these stations are ATW and they won't touch it.

Is there any requirement for these timetables to be in areas accessible to the general public, such as on the concourse, or can they be anywhere, for example behind a gateline, or in an area only accessible to those holding a ticket? The only poster-size timetables displayed at Manchester Piccadilly as far as I'm aware are inside Northern's "revenue block" now.

But at least they are displayed!

Prior to Northern extending to Nottingham there was no Sheffield to Nottingham complete timetable up at Sheffield, the destinations were in the AZ listing, except for Langley Mill.
I always had to ask a member of staff for the next departure time to L Mill, and they would always take me to the AZ boards :)

The ones at Hastings are like that as well. It's annoying as there's one of those flippy noticeboard thingies in the concourse which could also display the information. Instead it's empty or used for Network Rail/Southeastern puff pieces. There's also no paper timetables which always seemed odd to me.

The gateline staff are lovely and have always let me through when I've asked nicely though.

I have just moved to Northumberland and use Newcastle station a lot. There aren't any timetables in the entrance and the ticket office has been moved to a tiny office hidden away in the main buildings. Passengers often have to queue outside the office in the cold. The left luggage office is now a Sainsburys. You can buy coffees from the multitude of coffee bars, buy silly socks etc etc. but if you want to know what time the next train is to Morpeth or have the audacity to want to buy a ticket then life is made very hard for you.
That just show where the priorities lie now.
Oh yes the station announcers pompously say that anyone needing assistance should ask for help. From whom should we ask for help? Porters are thing of the past.

Should also be noted I have discovered that the Sheffield to Cleethorpes via Brigg trains are not even listed on the A-Z timetables at Sheffield!
