You can often get a seat reservation without a ticket by asking nicely on Twitter. Or on LNER just make one online with your email address.

Getting a seat reservation before I have bought a ticket (on the day) - learning things all the time!
Whenever I have asked for a seat reservation at the booking office on the day of travel they have always said they close 6pm the previous day.

It varies. They may do for early morning services.

There's no point buying a fleixible ticket before the day of travel.

There is when reservations are compulsory/pseudocompulsory or you like a specific seat.

If you have a booking account with GWR or TransPennine Express, you can also make a seat* reservation for any reservable service on the ‘my bookings’ section of their site. Unfortunately, whilst you can specify seat preferences, neither have a seat selector.

*Some services issue counted place reservations rather than seat reservations e.g. “reservable” SWR, Southern, Thameslink and Northern services. I wouldn’t bother making reservations for these.
