Given that most people now have a smartphone, which will likely have a decent resolution screen, it's odd that some companies are trying so hard to produce incredibly 'lite' versions of their site for mobile.

Strip out the graphics (and Flash) by all means, but don't cut back on what you can actually DO on the site. That is unless you're deliberately trying to force people to use an app instead!

I mean, if you've got an iPhone or any Android phone with an 800x480 pixel screen, why do you need a mobile site? And if you have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus with a 1280x720 pixel screen - your screen is bigger than the width of the desktop site anyway, so you'll be zooming in!

A real question for the majority of people who are scared of giving out their bank details online is not whether the trustworthy website they're using is secure enough, but rather whether the website is trustworthy.

That is very true - I couldn't have put it better myself.

Yes, for instance, I was trying to look up South West trains website. Now, was it swtrains.co.uk?, southwesttrains.co.uk?, or what? Now, it really is so much easier to look it up on a Search engine than trying all sorts of permutations in the hope of hitting on the right one eventually.

I'm not denying the need for search engines. I myself use "Google Product Search" to find the cheapest website when I want to buy an item.

The important part is to research any website you find. Many people are in a rush, so get scammed. Others (particularly the elderly) just trust any website they come across! After finding a website, search for reviews abut the company. Check these reviews to see if the web address matches. Search to see when the domain name was registered (http://www.register.com/whois.rcmx). Try ringing the company. Etc, etc...
