I'd Just like to say to everybody that this is a really great forum. Its the people on it that make it great. I haven't been here long but you guys have settled me into it great. I know on other forums newbies get treated like muck. Thanks for being so helpful everyone. :D

Totally agree with you, i had a look at a few forums before opting on this one, it's head and shoulders above the rest.

Yes, I would also agree.

I would like to say I have some friends on here but I've never been to a RailUK meet nor have I met anyone from here but I share interests with the people I know and can have discussions of interest with them so I guess they are friends.

But yes, great forum they also made me feel really welcome when I joined!

Also agreed.
Have seen some of the other forums around and they are not a patch on this - many with people slandering others etc - RailUK is much more orderly and there are sensible discussions which is great. It also means you get sensible answers to questions too.

I was introduced by a friend who had joined and it looked fairly interesting, with my interest in railways in general (operations etc too) increasing ever since coming to uni a few years back.

I don't really know anyone on here though and have never been to a meet, but who knows, could happen at some point :)

Its great to hear people are enjoying the forum, you don't very often get 'nice' comments, so thanks :D :rf:

We always like to meet more members, anyone is welcome on meets and it'd be great to meet more of you!

What I particularly like is the Fares & Ticketing section. The complexity of the British rail ticketing system never ceases to amaze me and even though I don't post much in it I regularly read the posts there as I always feel I can learn something whether it be right of wrong, good or bad.

I've lost count of the number of new members that make their first post in there to ask questions regarding an upcoming journey or a difficulty they experienced. Long may it continue.

Rock on. :D

As Jordy says, it's nice to get some positive feedback now and then, thanks! The forum really has flourished and become more popular over the last year or so (despite the predictions of a few!) - only a few months back we used to have around 1,000 active members in a 30 day period, now it is over 1,300. We also had a record number of posts on a single day a few weeks back.

One poster mentions being introduced to the forum by a friend - how did others discover it?

I Googled something a while back, and the Forum came up first choice, I clicked on it and it got saved to the murky depths of my Favoourites on my computer. Going through my Favourites about a year later, I found it, opened it and decided to join.

I remember on TSC forum (before it went) having a link to your thread about getting BVE4 to work on Vista. I read the thread, but I didn't register. A few weeks later, I came across it again (but I didn't know it was the same forum) and I registered! :)

I think that like with many others, through simple search engine doodling. Google has the terms for "rail(way) forum" pretty well covered for RailUK with positions 1 or 2. Well done guys. And well worth the time spent here for me too. :p

And to add, the discussion is indeed not only informative but also civil. The level of discussion often found "outside" was sharply brought home for example in the Scotsman plane v. train thread, where an enthusiast with an axe to grind against rail has had a number of "gos" against others' opinions and facts... Not something one is accustomed to around here.

I joined this site after having it suggested to me that I take a look and I've never looked back, some posts are quite informative and despite not yet meeting many from this site, it's a good way to make friends.

For one thing, it's always nearly the first port of call for ticketing queries for me, looking at photos detailing the progress of the engineering works in Scotland, news on what's happening across the UK etc....

Aye, I like this forum too. Lots of interesting people (well, interesting to cranks anyway.......) and some lively discussions. It's got me into a much better understanding of the byzantine ticketing 'system' this country has, and has saved me and my friends/colleagues/employer a small fortune already!

As a member of rail staff I'm afraid I'm beginning to tire of this place and am soon going to get to the point of leaving.

I've been here for almost five years and have always been happy to share my knowledge and give the perspective from inside the fence, but I'm getting tired of the arguments and having to explain or justify myself. In fact, never have I felt so demoralised. I know my job well enough and, while I won't shy away from a heated debate, don't like it when people from outside the industry seem to know better. This is my job and I know it well so, while I'm sure there may be better ways of doing things, I don't like people with a little knowledge telling me I'm wrong. I wouldn't dare do the same to someone who is a nurse, pilot, banker or in any other profession I know a little about, so why am I not accorded the same courtesy?

I know that this post is incredibly self-indulgent and not in my normal character, but I'm getting fed up and feel that a line needs to be drawn. By all means lets have a discussion or even an argument. I can take all opinions and don't mind it when people disagree or I'm proved wrong, but please don't try to tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about.

I was doing a google search trying to find another railway forum that I had been on before. Didn't find it, but did find this instead.

Shame about that OL, I can see what you mean though I think it's annoying when someone makes good posts then the "cretins" just argue it to the death, the same with Old Timer his posts and weath of knowledge is epic and some people can't help but argue with everything he posts

I love the forum too. It's not often you find female enthusiasts and it was nice to see one or two others in residence on here :)

However i was welcomed well when i joined, and was never made to feel unwelcome at all. Some of my posts have caused debate, but i belive thats what a forum is all about.

While ive seen some rediculously uneeded personal insults in some cases, i do belive the mods act quickly and appropriately at all times.

It's certainly a nice place to be, and i thank the members and mods that make it so.

I wouldn't take it to heart old chap. It's the nature of the internet, where everyone gets a say, even though it might be complete cobblers.

I'm often told I'm talking crap, about the business I was in (the railways) and the current one I'm in. But I'm working against 100 years of selective tabloid reporting, misconceptions, stereotype and misinformation, so I fully expect there to be some resistance.

With the current business, what some people post is on the money, and we take note of it. Other posts are just plain conspiratorial or pretend to know the business better than you.

I think every business is like this, none are universally loved and most have many misconceptions or look simpler than they really are.

You only have to read the comments pages on newspapers to see what rubbish is spoken, and how the post that just fit the mood get the most ratings even though they are off the radar.

Anyone can pitch up and be an expert on anything, with the minimum of knowledge, research or expertise.

I'm only on here to share my knowledge to, and sometimes I feel it's really not appreciated at all. But I really am not bothered, because it's the nature of the beast you are going to get some stick.

On the whole, this forum is mature and fairly well considered, the real problem for me is it can use a lot of my time.

That would be a loss; a seasoned pro, quoting from the rule book, cutting through uninformed gibber and giving us perspective 'from the coal face' without too much axe grinding. Not too many others on here can regularly do that.

Old Timer is an interesting example. I have nothing but respect for his wealth of experience-based knowledge, and the patient way in which he puts things across even to 'cretins' as you so charitably call them ;)

However, far too many of his posts are riddled with irrelevant Thatcherite rhetoric, hankering after some probably non-existent golden age, when what we really want is his railway expertise. I would imagine that this winds some people up quite badly. I personally prefer to refrain from getting into political debates that don't pertain directly to the subject matter. So it's OK to talk about whether privatisation was a good thing or not (it wasn't ;)), but I'd prefer not to hear on a railway forum about how the post-war liberal concensus is responsible for all the ills of society. If I want a lot of partisan ranting I'll go to Free Republic or The Guardian Talkboard.

Good points well made. I came upon the forum after a 20-year absence from the scene and pangs of nostalgia.

The sheer diversity of topics, writing-styles, experience and knowledge make for many hours of fascinating reading and fun contribution. Journalism was never so much fun!

And no Monday morning would be complete without seeing Swiss Toni win ANOTHER Photo Of the Week!

For the thread-trolls, the hyper-sensitive and the rude - well I simply ignore their posts.

I was googling Class 380 and this site came up in the results.

O L Leigh

Dear OL,

I also share a lot of your feelings and frustrations, especially the point about always having to defending yourself, me and you have often shared this on that rare occasion we get to meet up, plus we have both come from other forums in the hope that the next one might be better. I have already left one forum group as a direct result of what you have mentioned (wnxx), i occasionally visit a couple of others, but they seem to stifle out debate (you know which one im talking about). Please reconsider your decision to leave, your posts are some of the most interesting ones on here.

Dear All,

I do find this an interesting forum though and you are more or less allowed to express opinions even if you disagree with someone else. I like the ticketing area as even though I'm a rail employee even i have taken the advice of others who have a far greater knowledge of such things. There are lots of things that both enthusiasts and employees agree on ( the poor press and sensationalist reporting that goes on is just one of them). As a Conductor on board a train, i occasionally ask an enthusiast how they got into the hobby and how in the very modern era how they keep it going and the suchlike. A lot of people see me on here as spouting Bob Crow's mantra, a lot of that is because i am as passionate about the railways as an enthusiast, its just i go about it in a different way.

I hope the forum keeps going from strength to strength.

I will just say, The lot of you are suck ups
To O L Unfortunately the main rule of the internet is if your opinion doesnt agree with mine I will shout you down until you submit. By the way I'm not refering me, as in actually me I'm it just represents the majority of the internet who think they know better.

That doesn't make sense. The internet is just a medium, like any other medium. Perhaps you are thinking of newsgroups. This forum, certainly has no such "main rule".

If by "the majority of the internet" you actually mean "the majority of internet users", then I think it's daft to try to say what the majority of people who use the internet think. Given that the majority of people in this country - and most developed coutries - have internet access somewhere, you're attempting to speak for the majority of people in the developed world? I think it's best not to try to make sweeping statements like that.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say!

This is an interesting thread actually. For what it's worth, I joined many years ago after there was a small exodus (if such a thing is possible!) from a site called railwayscene.co.uk and someone there recommended this place to me.

Like O L Leigh, I am rail staff and can sympathise with his point of view. I try and stick to what I know best and offer knowledge or experience in that area (Rolling stock engineering and technology). On the occasions when I come up against a member who thinks they know better despite having no industry experience or engineering qualifications, I've tried to be diplomatic, but it's the lack of respect that annoys me.

Such people are in the minority here though. I think this place is a good window on the rail community as a whole.

Not railway forums are particularly guilty of this, but being with sites like youtube, and devientart, a lot of the users are always looking for an arguement. I think I was overexgerating by saying the majority of the users, sometimes it feels like that though.
