When I were a lad trees were cut well back from the lineside, and you got a good view from the train. These days, NR seem to encourage tree growth! On the Eurostar through south London last week the branches were squeaking aong the side of the train as it passed.
Sometimes you can travel for miles on a rail line with no view except a blur of green from lineside vegetation. Do NR do this on purpose to cut down noise and visual annoyance for lineside houses?
One noticable place it's got a heck of a lot worse is where the WCML runs alongside the M1 at Watford Gap. At one time you had a clear view of the motorway as you sped past the cars. Now, with the train leaving the cars behind at an even faster rate, the motorway is all but invisible behind a forest of trees.
NR should fell them all, so the gridlocked motorists could see us whizz past in the Pendos, and maybe that would make a few motorists vow to use the train next time!
