Just to be positive in the face of the current timetable meltdown I did the following trip this last week:
Leicester to St Pancras
Sleeper Euston to Fort William
Fort William to Glenfinnan
Glenfinnan to Mallaig
Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness
(Anyone spotting the Julie Walters influence yet...?)
Inverness to Aviemore
Aviemore to York
York to Derby
Derby to Leicester

And every single train was on time. Train staff were unfailingly polite and friendly. And Scottish Advance fares are remarkably cheap as well. Even the sun was shining all week in Scotland.

It’s not all doom and gloom on the railway.

Good to hear :)

Did you use the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale? And presumably a bus from there to Kyle?

A group of us did the trip in reverse 4 weeks ago.

Yes, we took the ferry over to Armadale and then, still being Julie Walters inspired, went by taxi to Kyle. (Had booked the taxi in advance). Hotels in Glenfinnan, Kyle and Aviemore. Oh, and a spin on the Speyside railway.

We also did the Speyside. Were they keen for you to sit in a designated seat when you travelled? I've never had that on a preserved railway anywhere else.

How much was your taxi, out of interest? We paid £40 for 7 of us but it took a lot of work from @Starmill to get such a good deal. Many companies didn't want the business.

My taxi was £40 and that without any negotiation. But there were only two of us, so perhaps it makes allocating the vehicle easier. Speyside experience was the opposite of yours. They were running the DMU and invited me to sit in the cab. Mind you, it was a very quiet Friday morning with about 6 passengers in total.
