It's a pity there's no average age based on region rather than operator ( I looked, there doesn't appear to be ).

For their age, I think the original purple Standard seats with the small (synthetic?) leather patch at the head have done very well, and it's a shame they didn't continue with the patches when they were re-upholstered.Oh definitely, I remember when the 170s were still quite fresh and they really were quite nice. They've been getting decidedly tatty, especially those with the original NatEx interiors, since about 2015-16 onwards. I remember the last time I had '401 on a Dunblane, and the First Class cabin was so tatty, you'd easily think the unit was 40 years old and had never had a refurbishment, rather than a shade over 15 years old as she was at the time. Pity too, '401 was always one of the best units - it delivered my highest recorded 170 speed of 103.1mph. By contrast my last trip on a late-running Inverness-Glasgow with '432 failed to exceed 95, even on the final sprint the E&G, we accelerated to and simply held that speed until power was shut off just past Lenzie.
No thanks! For their age, I think the original purple Standard seats with the small (synthetic?) leather patch at the head have done very well, and it's a shame they didn't continue with the patches when they were re-upholstered.
Some of the blue seats look really quite dirty at head level.
Agreed. I'd sooner know about something not being clean than be fooled into thinking it was when it wasn't.Really got to disagree there - at least a wipe cleans it. I doubt any of the ScotRail 170s have had the fabric cleaned in a long long time.
It's not the sort of thing I take pics of, so next time I'm on, I'll see if I can get a photo of the grotty headrest!
Indeed. I would love to see the figures from north of Dunblane. Now that would be headline grabbing! It's a pity there's no average age based on region rather than operator ( I looked, there doesn't appear to be ).
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Chiltern’s stock doesn’t feel especially old when I use it (even the loco hauled stock) so they must do a good job maintaining things… cosmetically at least.Yes, ORR does, table 6313 linked from this page, last release October 2021

This is similar for GWR, EMR and TfW. For the former two, the non-London diesel only stock is old. I’m quite surprised how much GWR has fallen down considering all the Turbos, Castles, Sprinters, Express Sprinters and the 769s they have (if those count)The new 380/5s in the central belt are skewing the figures for Scotrail whereas the reality for many is the old diesel fleets in use.
