I see so many times, not just here, people trying to be funny, but failing miserably.

With April the 1st coming up, this idea of humour extends to stupidity. I mean, it's called April FOOLS right? So I am supposed to be fooled with something that is believable, not told a "joke".

For example, someone posting saying the 442s are coming back and being hauled by 73s/68s/88s... whatever. Yes, I know they're returning to service but thinking prior to that news... it wouldn't be funny because it wouldn't happen.

Maybe I am just getting more and more grumpy but it is just me that tires of "jokes" that simply aren't funny? They dont' even raise a smile, not a sausage.

So you won’t be joining the queue for the pacer uk tour starting at Waterloo then. ;)

I take the view they don’t do any harm. What I actually find more amusing is the ones that are fact but seem unbelievable. Just imagine is the “northern getting class 180s” broke on April 1st. Most us us didn’t believe it was going to happen until we saw them in the NorthWest anyway.

Good day to bury bad news.

Actually it was announced that the tour will be starting from Paddington because GWR couldn't get drivers to sign the route via Kenny O in time, although the timings on RTT show that it's booked on the Mains, so it should be a good high speed run to Reading.

Hadn’t see that. Oh well shame I won’t get my photo of a pacer in platform 21 at Waterloo but the alternative sounds good. Looking forward to it.

What I find boring is that the April issue of some magazines always contains an "April Fool Spoof" - even if that magazine is published in the middle of March (or sometimes earlier).

I saw one years ago, saying that to ease prison overcrowding, they were going to brick up the arches on the Ribblehead viaduct and make a sort of high rise cells in the space provided, but narrow gaps / no glass in the would have be incorporated to allow for window to blow through.

That's most days on here isn't it? ;)

It's getting overdone a bit these days, and there's only so many anagrams of April Fool that can be used as the name of someone in the story:s

I agree that the A.F. business tends to get wearisome: but I have rather fond memories of a piece which appeared in one of the daily papers, a good many years ago now, which at least found an original angle on the "anagram" thing. The spoof involved a long, complicated tale about archaeologists discovering a -- very narrow-bore -- tunnel under the English Channel, dug by and for smugglers around the year 1800. Said tunnel ran from near Dover, to emerge at the village of Pilarolof near Boulogne; the piece included supposed quotes of various pronouncements by the village mayor, Monsieur Raol Pofil.

I must be getting a bit grumpy, or is it nostalgic, in my elder years.
Most of those seen in the last few years are pretty lame, especially compared to some of the true classics ...
A couple of which come to mind - Spaghetti Harvest and the Islands of San Serif.
I missed the first, but remember the second, in fact I probably still have the cuttings.

Personally, I tend to ignore the wilder stories in the media - especially before noon, unless I have alternative source / confirmation.

I'm not against April Fools but some media outlets seem to go OTT these days

It's OTT these days because it's big business. Companies are now going to news organisations to give them their joke under embargo. News organisations run them because they need to fill pages and many can go viral and earn everyone a bit of traffic/money (and free advertising).

As such they get more and more crazy every year, and I expect some businesses pay BIG bucks to create them.

Nothing wrong with more simple jokes, but it's a shame it's now a commercial event.

Yes April fools day is absolutely pointless it should be banned. The whole idea is to play a prank that is so convincing that someone would become the fool for falling for it. But these days people are doing the most stupid pointless things that they are the actual fool themself.

Now people want to know what joke company X did, so there's little chance of fooling anyone.

In the world of tech, I can say now that a number of sites will have a top nn jokes list that goes live on the day. How can you be fooled when they're simply listed?
