Tirano / Trenord

Hi all,

Hoping you may be able to help / confirm my fears. I'm travelling from Zurich to Milan via the Bernina Express this Friday and from what I can see the regional train from Tirano seems to have a part bus replacement. I can't see anything about this in the 'Planned changes' part of the Trenord website but it comes up in the journey planner. This would impact the connection I've unfortunately already booked from Milan.

Is anyone able to confirm this?

trenitalia.com also has the bus replacement so that seems correct.

Thanks, as I feared! I presume there's nothing I can do about the non-refundable train connection I had booked from Milan to Florence to coincide with the usual timetable...?

It might not be refundable but is it changeable? Most Trenitalia and Italo tickets are, basically the same as our Advances, for a fee+fare difference.

Ah yes it is, but it seems that first class (which I was booked in) is sold out for hours, so I might just have to buy a standard new ticket. Sigh! The perils of reservation only trains...

Surprised it doesn't let you downgrade, you can when changing a UK advance.

AIUI Trenitalia are fairly good about rebooking passengers who have missed connections, so I would suggest just using the RRB and asking for assistance at Milano C.le. Whether they can get you on the very next train is another matter as it is Friday night.

Alternatively, taking the standard-hour connections at Chur-Samedan-Pontresina gets you to Tirano in time for the 12.38 bus - those connections are reliable, but you miss out on the panoramic 1st class.

Having done that in the last weeks, I can confirm that the connections are feasible even if they look tight, and my coach was nearly empty (so not panoramic, but easy to change side according to your preferred view, etc.)

I can confirm the bus replacement from my trip at the end of July. Thw staff in the ticket office at Tirano were helpful.

The staff were indeed helpful though the coach was very full! I posted a trip report here should anyone be interested.
