Hi there

I last had a train SIM game for my PC about 10 years ago.

I recently have decided I'd like to start again. I'm bit overwhelmed with the various offers there are.

I would like to a Train SIM with a good selection of routes, including East Anglia where I live and up to date rolling stock.

Id like it for my PC
Al advice welcome

If you want nice visuals and more buttons to press but you're less fussed about the trains and routes you drive, go for Train Sim World 6 (TSW6).
If you want realism, variety and the ability to easily mod stuff and create your own scenarios, go for Train Simulator Classic (TSC).

Either way, you'll generally need 16GB+ of RAM and a half-decent GPU to get a good experience on either (if NASA have something spare then that's always my go-to choice) and you might want to consider taking out a (second) mortgage to cover the cost of the game and all the route+train DLCs.

Some TSC advice:
Although the creators of TSC, Dovetail Games (DTG) made a GEML route 12 years ago, it's pretty dated and has been superseded by newer stuff (see below). In the east of England, most of the routes+trains are made by third-parties (don't know why); Armstrong Powerhouse (AP), for example, has the Wherry Lines, the Class 156, 170, 315, 317 and 321 various packs for the loco-hauled Wherry+GEML services, and some good enhancement packs for the game. If you've got a couple of kidneys spare, Alan Thomson Sim (ATS) has Cambridge to Peterborough, King's Cross to King's Lynn and the GEML, plus a Class 745 and Class 755. Bear in mind that many third-party add-ons (especially ATS stuff) has a lot of payware requirements that you need beforehand.

Hopefully that covers most of your questions; feel free to ask if you still have any. :)

Just confirming what CarrotPie said, I have (and enjoy) TrainSim Classic. Has a mass of routes and trains, some really big routes. Usually always something on offer.

Armstrong Powerhouse sound / enhancement packs aren't essentially, but increase the experience when driving.

I prefer TSW, reason being its stable plus I have a Raildriver console so it can be configured by TSW menu.
I think the physics are better too, with things like braking. But that's just me.
Another thing, you can walk around in foot mode in TSW and you can go exploring!

I was in similar situation East Anglia based, interested in the mainline mostly - I looked into all the Train Sim Classic add ons, but as CarrotPie says you have to commit to a lot of purchases to get close to something you require.

In the end I went for Train Sim World 6, got the Suffragette and Mildmay lines which use the 710s. Hoping this will be a platform if and when a GEMA reaches the franchise… which I feel is in demand!

Always keep any eye out for deals on Steam!

Indeed, they have more sales than MFI ;)
Think there is one due this weekend, there wasn't one last weekend. Seriously.
I'm actually still on TSW5, I'm just hanging on for a sale with a cracking deal which I have done in the past.

I started with TSW5 - I picked up the special edition in May for £26 which was retailing at £104 previous! From memory I think Classic was going for £5.99 at the time too!

TSW6 is now on sale on Steam, plus other add-ons.
Going to upgrade to TSW6 deluxe for £25.99 (retailed at £64.99).
See, it pays to wait. Was after the Rivera line more than anything at a reasonable price plus the TSW6 upgrade.

Just spotted the special edition at £41.99 (was £104.99), the special edition includes Cardiff City network.

I have been toying with that idea, need to look into the Cardiff City network more.

For anyone looking to delve into Train Sim World, I would suggest grabbing the game from Loaded (formerly CDKeys):

The Special Edition of TSW6 is currently £31.99 there, and very often the games are on a sale, far more regularly than on Steam itself and also generally cheaper than Steam's 'Sale' prices.

There should also be a fair amount of Train Simulator Classic content available through here as well, including older versions of the game with different bundled routes to what's available on Steam currently (I got TS2018 for about £5 from here a few years ago, as that was the only way to get the original North Wales Coast route with the Virgin branded Voyagers for Train Sim Classic at the time, with the version of the route available directly on Steam being the unbranded version).
