Tinted glass on Voagers

Afternoon everyone.

An incredible phenomenon happened to me last week in the north of England. Firstly the sun was shining, and secondly I was able to find an unreserved window seat on a Cross Country train between Leeds and Newcastle.

All well and good I thought. Alas, as the train was heading north and the sun was behind the train it resulted in the suns rays bouncing off the back of the seats in front of me and because of the voyager’s tinted windows all I could see out of the window looking forward was the back of the seats! Not the view I wanted to see !

So why were these “Virgin” trains fitted with this glass and do any other classes have them ?

I always liked the tinted windows on the Great Western HST's. Gave Devon and Cornwall an even more golden, bucolic look than they already had.

The Voyagers and 222s have the reflective glazing. In either case the phone signal on board is terrible. The wifi is equally bad unless the train is fairly empty, so I find it pretty difficult to do much work on the laptop especially considering how most of the Microsoft stuff performs without a decent web connection.

EMR have made a big thing of their new 810s having a different sort of coating that they claim lets phone signals through much better.
